I got a whole rig from a guy for my new G3. He sold it to me for $25 and some ammo.

The way he has it set up it can take 14 mags. That's 280 rounds of 7.62x51 NATO. That seems kind of excessive to me but then again I'm use to bolt action rifles.

Even with the shoulder straps this thing is heavy. I mean relay heavy and I'm short stocky and in shape. I'm not sure if he planed on moving much with this thing on but I don't see it happening.

I was thinking more along the lines of using one of the two mag capacity pouches. So thats 40 rounds pulse another 20 in the gun.I can throw one of the 6 mag capacity pouches in my pack if it comes to it and that frees up space on the belt for my pistol, bayonet, and flashlight.

I bought this so that I could have my bug out bag and battle pack as two different entities for different situations.

So is there a concensius on how much ammo you should be carrying around on your belt or in your pack.

carry as much as you think you might need and can carry comfortably. Otherwise you'll be like the guys in Viet Nam, Korea and WW2. As soon as you can you ditch what you think is too much for someone else to pick up.

Takes about 7 seconds to dump a 30 round mag during a break contact drill.

    IMHO:
We've had the "survivalist" vs. play soldier debate before...s'whyI try to keep out of "firearms"
How many "firefights" do you expect to live through? if you are gutshot you can't be much good to the folks depending on you... Carrying that much ammo doesn't leave room for much else
Arma-geddon outta here...you guys can have the "warrior of the wasteland" fantasies...I submit for discussion :
The"backpacking warriorof thewasteland survivalist" has largely been discredited as a myth of the late 70's survival fiction writers....

Nobody can tell you, there is no way to predict where you'll be standing august 15th 2027.. the combat "loadout" fortheM-1 garand in WWII was like 160 rounds in a bandoleer. I have always argued: "the modern magazine fed semi auto runs through mag after mag on a daily basis because the military has tthe logistical supply system in place to fly in (or airdrop), haul, store, and issue ammunition on a daily basis.

    You don't."

"well whatayagonna do when yourun out?
I'll use my massive thighs, arms and lung capacity built from carrying hundred of rounds around to crush their video game ridden skulls...
How many calories can you afford to expendandreplace everyday to keep the m1a or m4gery fed?.
I'm not saying they don't work in a defensive application...infact i'm not going to rant much more at all No point. ( what color is "blue"?); again Armageddon outta here...

That's why i think that two magazines and one in the gun is more than enough. I only relay need enough to get me to my bug out location in a worst case scenario. I'm going to be doing a LOT more camping than firefights. That's why I wanted the bugout/camping bag separate from any ammo.

I Highly drought that I will ever be in a firefight in a bugout situation. The guy I bought this thing from seems to think otherwise. His bug out gear includs and m1 carbean along with a bulet proof vest and kevlar helmit. He was very proud to show his mountin of crap to me but i don't think he has ever put it all on and gone for a run.

There is no way in hell i would want to carry all that crap.

In the past we've discussed pre-positioning gear so it doesn't have to be carried. I'd sure hate to carry 25 or more lbs of ammo at the expense of not being able to feed a family member.

Although, on a patrol where resistance was expected, you'd probably want a lot of extra rounds. I'm with Tango3 -- the less fighting I do, the longer I'll live (if I don't die of starvation).

I think the amount is going to be different for everyone. You need to pack your pack, then go on a hike. Nothing like a long walk to change your ideas about what you should carry. Like Eastwood said "A man's got to know his limitations."

I'ma stroke survivor still walk with a bit of alimp on the left. I aint going real far with 14 mags of .308, I may probably be rapidly headed for "darwin" country...but that's my affair.I'm not really tryng to belittle anyone. I'd like to have all the ammunition I could ever need,
    but I KNOW
I can't carry it into a running gun battle and do anything beside put the ghilli on and pretend to be a bush!.Young and healthy: YMMV!! :)

go you onebetter:"Although, on a patrol where resistance was expected"

I 'd want to be in a predug bunker with a giant pair of binoculars, a scoped bolt gun, and one finger on the home made claymore or "fu-gas" button. This mano-amano hide and seek "toe to toe sh*t" is for young experienced hardened troopers.. If you can help it " be where they aint or at least wherethey least expect you! [boozingbuddies][gun][gone][axe]

All I'm saying is consider what you might be USING that gun for.

If it's to scare someone... fine.

If it's to make yourself feel better... fine.

If you are looking at shooting it out, or covering fire...

Look at real life for guidance.

I don't plan on ever scaring someone without having a good enough reason to follow it up with two rounds going into center of mass.
this is great example of why I don't belong in"firearms" ...
    no point,
    enjoy your evening.
I don't really have a dog in this...
    its your choice anyway..
don't worry, I'll close the gate on the way out...

With my weight and health going against me, I too will NOT be a 'pack mule' for ammo. If I figure I need that much ammo, I'll use my SKS - those ten-round clips are far lighter and easier to pack than bulky mags. About as fast to load too, with practice.
If all goes well, and I do have to BO (a last-ditch option for me!) I will be mobile - truck or motorcycle. Mountain Bike if EMP or fuel problems come up. But I will be taking 'the roads less travelled'. I have mapped out various dirt roads and trails to get me up into 'safe' territory (weatherwise, not necessarily peoplewise).
I advocate stealth over 'meet & shoot' situations, if possible. I am NOT a trooper. I have no illusions of my abilities in a firefight.

This rant is off topic and "aint" about counting bullets.

I got caustic when the term "real Life" was rubbed in my face more than once...Well "real life" for me is: I'm not a Ranger. Real life is I only drew my weapon once as a badge carrier, real life is not going up against a trained fire team and fooling myself I can win the day. Real life means you can't hit the spacebar to reload, or ctrl+ P to change pistols between .22and .40. IN REALITY "real life" is rather mundane..

IWILL CONCEDE"Real life" is also NOT having a choice sometimes.
The reality is real life ends.
That is the logical fallacy where I get real froggy, using nomads' logic I should invest in anti tank and anti aircraft capability too.
I wouldbe interested to hear nomads idea of "real life".. instead of vaugue challenges to manhood
"You only want to scare somebody,"
"you only want to feel better".... I submit I'm not the one over compensating trying to guarantee control in every possible situation. You're right I don't want to kill anybody, (macho internet keyboard-commando version) :"I don'twanto kill anybody, who doesn't deserve it." I want to solely be left alone not go out looking for trouble. and that shouldn't provoke a macho challenge.
I shouldknowbetter, but I don't( is that stove hot? sizzle; Owwww)...I'm opening a gigantic can of worms that I don't relly have time or inclination to empty.
I'd be semi-interested to be enlightened to Nomad's view of this "real life" that obviously I am too wimpy to acknowledge.?

Real life is some ninja azzhole with a private army is gonna lay claim to the local watering hole as his own. and I've got beans to hoe...

    grrr.. "rant off" for today...

Think WWII Aussie coastwatcher. No way to defend against a patrol, figure on light and fast and leave no tracks if you have to move. Think concealment rather than confrontation. Think minimum supplies to reach one (and at least a second, just in case) of several caches, one of which you hope will not be uncovered while you are out. Think blending in rather than standing out. That works for the likes of me, even tho' I plan on sitting tight and looking like a sheep until I have to pull the wool off. Those of you with families and/or groups to shepard will be looking at something similar, if less able to hide in plain sight. One thing has become obvious over the last few years, I will be best as a rear guard. Old, slow, and expendable, and I am not the least afraid of confrontation if it comes to that. That said, I have two types of warm welcomes here, one each for friend or foe. It will take a serious effort to dislodge me, or a compelling need to be somewhere else.

Truth is, I am not at all concerned with MZBs, riot, or blue hats up here, that is why I am where I am. My preps are geared to the most probable bugaboo in the area, weather related interference with "normal" living.

Now, I need to do some preps for the Appleseed this weekend.

The way you reacted to "Real life"...

    That's how I reacted to:
    Fair enough?

And no, using my logic you should do what I said:

I stated why I believed you needed more than 2 mags... and as for
I didn't challenge your manhood and already gave it:

I'm sorry, I thought I had made it clear.
I don't want to kill anyone ever again. I don't need to wear 'Mall ninja' gear...

Yes I have a Platecarrier, but my 'grab and go' that I keep in the truck next to my AK is a Maxpidition shoulder bag with a first aid kit, compass, Miox water filter and 1 liter water blatter, multitool and some other stuff has 7 or 8 mags in it.
I've used it at Tactical Responses Advanced Fighting Rifle class, and it works and is enough ammo NOT to allow me to play 'Mad max' but to run my crippled butt out of there and live to run another day.

    Decaf?

Decaf Accepted, Sorry man , we get the occasional17year old airsoft ninja wanna be running through here..., I concede Iused some inflammatory words and grant you I have more than a50% share in this pissing contest I raised. Something about this topic manages to loosen my bowels and it comes up once a year or so. I wish I could have and infinite magazine llike B.A.barachus on the rest of the "A- team"too ; screech in jump out spray the open sky and the bad guys all put their guns down let the prisoners go, and walk away.

Govt psychologists would have afield day with that little steaming pile of feces on the floor right there. But its a boring Wednesday...
