Now, as some of you know, I am working on a TEOTWAWKI novel.

In this novel, a wealthy hobby-survivalist is stuck tending to a group of his friends who are traveling across the CONUS after TEOTWAWKI occurs. Two of the characters have extensive firearms training - the survivalist and an Army veteran, and another one has a limited experience hunting with his father and so forth. The other three people have very limited training, mostly limited to basic gun safety.

So, how would you provide those last 3 people with basic gun training after civilization is gone? Assume that before the event, you were rather wealthy and prepared.

    Welcome back, micro.

One thing your lead survivalist should already have done is obtain training materials similar to what the Revolutionary War Veteran's Association uses for their Appleseed Shoots. These events will make passing riflemen of complete neophytes. Your Army vet (assuming a grunt and not a fobbit) will be able to assist with this, as he should have kept his quals up.

Side issue, you might have a peek at Quig's post today on "suicide bomber elimination" and pass along some comments.

Basic gun training? Mine went something like this:

These are your sights. Line 'em up. You see that target? Hit it. If you miss the center, adjust accordingly.

I think that the first thing the Vets should teach the anti-gun wimps in question to do, is how to LOCATE COVER, and tell the difference between cover/concealment. They gonna need it.

The second thing I would do is try to locate trustworthy people who CAN fire a weapon, and use them instead.

The last option is to train these silly city dwelling maggots how to use a .22 long rifle, the basics of gun safety, and common misfire procedures. Work your way up to heavier weaponry at your own risk, and as TEOTWAWKI permits.

Here's a link to their schedule -- they've got training going on all over:

They used to have pdf documents on most of the techniques they teach - maybe still there. Great group, I'll be going 9/26-27 (hopefully bring my wife along).

Thank you. I will probably try and use what I can learn about Appleseed.

a crossbow would work. Not a great impliment, but far better than none, and everything about it can be rebuilt without using precious ammo supplies.

Since this is an after TEOTWAWKI scenario with a traveling group you will not be able to give the newbs a proper training course.
It will have to be as basic as possible. Safty, sights, loading, unloading simple maintenance.
As much practice as possible under those conditions
He will need to arm them with the simplest most foolproof of weapons.
Being a rich prepper he should already have a good collection of firearms to chose from.
My suggestion is for him to arm the newbs with simi-auto AKs. Simple and reliable also low maintenance.
Not the most accurate gun but will work for lightly trained people

Put the newbies on the front line. Then they can't shoot you and even if they turn and run they give you cover!!
