Obama phones: free cell phone for welfare slugs

I had a former employee call me earlier today inquiring about a job, and at the end of the conversation he gave me his phone number. I asked the former employee if this was a new cell phone number and he told me yes this was his "Obama phone." I asked him what an "Obama phone" was and he went on to say that welfare recipients are now eligible to receive (1) a FREE new phone and (2) approx 70 minutes of FREE minutes every month. I was a little skeptical so I Googled it and low and behold he was telling the truth. TAX PAYER MONEY IS BEING REDISTRIBUTED TO WELFARE RECIPIENTS FOR FREE CELL PHONES. This program was started earlier this year. Enough is enough, the ship is sinking and it's sinking fast. The very foundations that this country was built on are being shaken. The age old concepts of God, family, and hard work have flown out the window and are being replaced with "Hope and Change" and "Change we can believe in." You can click on the link below to read more about the "Obama phone." What next from this administration? Who is going to pay for this, and how much will it cost? Are you ready to pay for this, like you did the ‘cash for clunkers’ tax dollar giveaway?

he should probably be calling it a Roosevelt phone since the government's contribution to the program comes out of the universal service fund which has existed since 1936.

furthermore, the fund is already used to fund landline service for low-income households and that costs quite a bit more then the $10 phones and monthly pre-pay cards from TracFone cost.

besides, not having a phone is a crippling handicap when trying to find a job. how do you expect someone to get off of welfare if you make it all but impossible to get work?

Man. I guess that I have to go into this again...

YOUR tax dollars -pay for nothing. STOP believing in the class envy propaganda. This is meant to control, divide and distract you. WELFARE is not going to end until you replace your government. Period.

Stop blaming people for taking your hard earned money -when it's the government and the independently owned, private IRS and FED which call the shots.

Again -your tax dollars pay for absolutely NOTHING. Get over it.

Thank you.....I live in a city where we have a large homeless population, and a lot of daily labor offices...Some of the folks are really trying to get work, and go in every day, standing in line by 3:30 am....Some were laid off from good jobs, some just drift, some are trying to support families by doing this work, some are alcoholics that can't keep a full time job, etc.....And no, I'm not sticking up for all of them...just saying I know a couple, personally, that were laid off from jobs they thought they would retire from...and now , in order to keep their homes, etc...are doing what they have to do to get by.... The phone has been a godsend in getting rides, finding out if there is work, etc...It's 70 minutes a month. Not a lot of time....

While the daily labor places have been good for some...it also makes it harder for locals to find full time jobs, because a lot of the big companies that come here for huge construction jobs would rather use the labor companies than hire locals....No benefits to pay, no workmen's comp, etc......So many people end up just going and standing in line every day after looking for full time work and not finding any...

Do I have the solution? Nope...

Do I begrudge them a phone with 70 minutes a month to use? Not for one minute....I don't think the phone is the beginning of the end...especially for those trying to better their lives, and use it as a tool to find work.....At least they're going and not just sitting home drawing a Welfare Check, or Unemployment...These guys are actually trying...

Just my personal experience with 2 people I know....who are doing what they can to get by, keep food on the table, and keep their homes...

Yup. It's not going to be easy. I agree with you CRC. :)

I am astonished how silly people can be sometimes -they would rather be upset that a citizen draws unemployment or something, but they look like deer caught in the headlights when AIG gets bailed out for billions upon billions in one day.

They just don't get it. This monetary system is designed to fail. You might as well HOPE that the lives of your brethren can be improved at least a little before it is too late. Get out of debt folks.

Brokor, whatever you call it, tax, robbery, income redistribution, or an unearmarked gift from me to someone else unnamed, it was my asset until they (dot gov, privately owned operation or whatever) got hold of it. Fact remains we are paying for something we won't ever get benefit of, all at the legally enforceable behest of our elected representatives.

Worse, the need for such "government" largess is a bit questionable. Having used the phone on a number of occasions for job hunting, I can appreciate the idea. However, I did it from home on a land line, not in Starbucks on a damn expensive cell system. And, as I know as well, shoe leather works for job hunting and that is WAY less expensive than a phone and fills in the time instead of spending money or playing solitaire with a real deck of cards until dot gov starts passing out free computers.

If Ivan is right and there is already a land line safety net in place, the cell phones are a travesty, regardless of relative expense.

I'm completely with you on replacing the louts and spendthrifts we have mistakenly voted into office at any level. Out with louts. [winkthumb]

We have been living with redistributed wealth since the days of FDR. Income tax was a relative way to help ease the quick slide into heavy debt from the usury system of FIAT which is owned by private bankers and borrowed by WE the PEOPLE at face value plus interest. This debt (especially now we have the derivatives) can never ever be paid off.

What most people have an issue with is GENERATIONS of BELIEFS which have become CEMENTED into their BRAINS; "My tax dollars pay for...this, and that, and this." -WRONG.

We are all just rats in a cage, my dear friend. Or....fish in a barrel even.

Wow, a big fat wind of liberalism blew through here for phones for the underprivilaged.

BTW, your taxes do pay for stuff. Since you, I say you, because I don't vote, never have, never will, I won't let my conscience allow me to support these criminals to "run" our country into the ground. Since you elected to support your republicans and your democrats that have spent us , us being the U.S. into a big fat hole. Our taxes are buying us another year of debt. Yep at this point our taxes are paying for the interest on the debt. Just like the majority of americans, paying the interest on their credit cards. Yep their money is buying them another month of payments. (SLavery) in effect our government is a slave to the banks, as Joe six pack is a slave to whatever credit card company he is paying. So you are indirectly correct in saying our taxes aren't buying shit. At this point they are merely paying the interests on the shit our country has already bought, e.g a broken iraq and hey cell phones for people that aren't working to mention a couple. If we did not have such a deficit then our taxes would be paying for these phones directly. I do speak of federal taxes. State taxes, "sin" taxes and the other so called fee TAXES, are paying for actual stuff, although not the stuff "they" say it's for. e.g. lottery (tax on people bad at math) is to goto schools, but doesn't, etc. yeah ok.

I'm actually humored to see that some of you feel if it's someone you know that needs a cellphone then socialism, is A OK. LMFAO. Silly monkey

Slug, the term "Socialism" does not apply to being generous or kind. Granted, this phone program isn't exactly an opt-out idea; but it still isn't being funded by YOU -but your government would like you to think so. They will still overspend on "road upkeep", all the while they continue to raise tolls and property taxes. The CAFR will remain a mystery, where States will only show you a fraction of their worth just so they can continue to railroad YOU and receive added federal funds.

The thing is, some people just like to claim that "they" are paying for the "lazy guy" with the free phone. They probably hate their job. Hate the government. Hate the economy. And who better to blame than some guy who was laid off? That ba5tard, how could he? It must be SOCIALISM because it just sounds bad. Never mind the TRILLIONS of dollars lost by our own incompetent government and greedy bankers -I AM GONNA BLAME JOE BECAUSE HE CAN'T FIND A JOB! WHO NEEDS A DANG PHONE???

It's thinking like this which really pisses me off. In my opinion, YOU are the worthless ba5tards because you contribute NOTHING USEFUL except finger pointing at the wrong problem. So, get off your a55e5 and hold your representatives accountable if you want to do something useful. Don't blame the unemployed guy who now has a phone to receive info on job opportunities -making him feel more human and useful. Let's DEGRADE HIM and call him a lousy piece of sh*t. It's all HIS FAULT.

And I won't ever vote either. I never will -until we once again have a working republic, and that kind of change can only happen violently.

My opinion, every bit as important as yours, maybe even more since I am a taxpayer as well as a voter who lets his representatives know how he feels, thinks it might have done you some good growing up, if your parents occasionally washed your mouth out with soap or taught you the golden rule, and the ten commandments, or sent you to church. Your foul mouth and pointed name calling above sir offends me. I will try not to respond in kind.
    .
It is SOCIALISM when the government ignores the Constitution and redistributes wealth. Charity is up to the individual, not the Government! Generosity and Kindness. Give me a break. It's easy for a corupt government to be generous and kind with Taxpayers dollars!
    .
IN MY OPINION, THE INDIVIDUAL WHO DOES NOT VOTE AND TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN GOVERNMENT HAS LITTLE OR NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT SAID SAME GOVERNMENT. They are the worthless people who contribute nothing useful.

Taxes are unconstitutional, the IRS is a privately owned corporation. State taxes don't really get applied as you may think, and if you factor your share in for the phones, you would have paid a few cents. To help people get jobs. To make your own economy stronger. Way to object to "Socialism", Hero.

Ad Hominem. Empty rhetoric. And perhaps you are the type to be offended, so thank your God for the freedoms I fought for in another senseless war against a people who just happen to live in a place where Enron and Exxon can raise their banners. I do apologize for the strong language, though. It shouldn't be on this forum, as a rule.
Again, you're not paying taxes to the government -you are paying them to a private corporation as collateral on the national debt for a currency which is illegal and unconstitutional.
Voting for the two-party false paradigm may make you FEEL like you are contributing; this is the point of the Hegelian principle. The truth is, that nothing ever changes, does it, my friend? Oh look. Another Democrat or Republican in office again -I bet it makes some people feel all warm inside.

*edit* Oh, and I edited my post to reflect the altered "curse words", known as BA5TARD and A55E5.

let me get this correct. YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN VOTING. it's unclear whether you pay taxes or not. You certainly object to them on the grounds that they are unconstitutional and illegal. You probably don't want to admit it here if you don't pay taxes. But, the truth of the matter is, that if you don't pay taxes and you don't vote, then you got no dog in this hunt, so why should anyone listen to anything you say? As to your military service... WELL THANK YOU !!! and, I really mean that! I am sorry that you volunteered to support the oil industry. I entered the service in 1967 as a volunteer rather than being drafted. I had no real choice. YOU HAD A CHOICE. If your time in service left you upset and disillusioned with the nation, well I feel sorry for you to a point. I retired from the military in 1994. I probably should ask, are you disabled from combat or service related injuries? If you are, I probably should SHUT UP. If your not, well you figure it out!

Oh Tac. I have been here for so many years...that when a person such as yourself comes along, all I can do now is ask you to do a search. Half of my life is on this forum.

As for your assumptions which include some ridiculous fantasy about voting and paying taxes as the entry form to being an American -I find this absolutely ridiculous. You are saying that I have NO SAY in our country because I refuse to pay taxes to the IRS and because I do not vote? (I actually do pay taxes as a military soldier, I have no claim to do otherwise) Additionally, whether I pay taxes, or vote -is none of your business. You might want to try attacking the SUBJECT instead of the person. This is called ad hominem, and some people like to do it because their argument has no merit.

I guess that you may need a little information to assist you in your quest to find some "true Americans": http://www.givemeliberty.org/ - http://www.freedomabovefortune.com/ - http://www.barefootsworld.net/war_ep1.html

True, it takes a whole lot of ticks to weight a pound, but each has to be picked off, one by one. (Gotta admit, hitting the high hard spots is apt to be effective, but I cannot see why not get the ones we can out of the way first. If we can, at all, ever.)
