found this in my home personal e-mail inbox today: Is this the infamous spam that was a recent topic of discussion? or something new?: Is this (guns.net) some how connected to themonkey? Don't believe I use "tango 3" anywhere else... But i cant swear I didn't open some other account with "t3".( "crs" syndrome settling in forthelong haul)

We haven't seen that one, I don't think. And so far as I know, we have no connection to that outfit. Google your user name, if it pops up, the chances are fair a bot found you. (They somehow found me that way.)

There are links to me on more than one forum, and some comments I've placed in news forums show up as well. If anyone really wanted to know what I am, it would not be at all difficult to figure me out.

This subject of on line personal security has come up on SM in the past and it is worth ringing the bell again; you cannot hide on line. FWIW, the more frequently you post (and the more current your posts are) the closer to the top of a google search list you appear. We have a member that hasn't posted in quite a while who shows up, but way, way down on the "umpteenth" page.

Also FWIW, it looks like PMs can be sent via the SM link, I might test this later today next time I log off. (Obviously, if you don't log off when you open a new window, you have access, even if the SM window is not open.)

Had a look while not logged on. Appears like PMs and visitor messages cannot be sent if not a registered user and on line. A good thing --

At this point, a bot would have to be fairly sophisticated to hook onto those links and generate a spam mailing list, probably not worth the effort for a relatively small target group; we don't have all that many active users. Likewise, if your e-mail address shows in your public profile, it could be harvested for a mailing list. (Test this while you are not logged in.) Again, we are small relative to the rest of the world, and the effort to harvest 3 or 4 hundred addresses for a spam campaign would not be worth it. However, an alphabet agency has the resources and maybe the interest to do it (you can bet they have; they can set up bots to do keyword searches.) The risk is there, it is up to the individual to decide if membership access is a risk worth taking, and also up to the individual what attention his posts will attract. It is worth noting that we have seen many bots visiting the site, as in every day and more than one at a time. The usuals are google and yahoo, several of each at a time, and others turn up regularly.

For me, the risk was and remains worth it. Gotta say, I've learned tremendously here on the general subject of survival preparation, and it has focused my attention and efforts on the probability scale, from inconveniences to full blown TEOTAWAKI. You pick your own poison on that scale, and do preps accordingly.

I'm here, any "damage" is done already...
I should probably type, preview , go get a another cup of coffee, preview yet again, edit then submit; more often.

Just throwing out my [2c]. While the Monkey is the only forum that I am a "regular" on I have registered on a few others that I infrequently post on.
I always register under a different name. Usually something relevent to that forum. My thought is why leave your footprints all over the net.
As far as posting here or elsewhere. Yeah a little common sense should be observed. And posting anything illegal or against our COC will be removed quickly by our staff.

The way I look at it if it's time to lay down our freedom of speech then it's time to pick up our rifles.

(disclaimer:the above sentence is for illustration purposes only. ATF, I am refering to a properly registered firearm legaly owned by a properly cleared and approved subject, I mean citizen. FBI, I am in no way inciting anyone to take up arms against the government( at this time). IRS, I am refering only to personal, legaly owned property that all taxes levied against have been paid in full, and continue to be paid annually if in the case of a class 3 firearm. CIA, I am a native born american citizen and attest that there are no hidden coded messages to Al Queda in this post.)
