News Corp. Likely to Pull Fox From Time Warner Cable (Update3) Share Business ExchangeTwitterFacebook| Email | Print | A A A

By Andy Fixmer and Kelly Riddell

Dec. 30 (Bloomberg) -- News Corp. said it’s not likely to reach an agreement with Time Warner Cable Inc. and expects to pull Fox broadcasting from the cable system when their deal expires tomorrow.
“We deeply regret that millions of Fox customers will be deprived of our programming,” Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey said today in a memo to employees. “We need to receive fair compensation from Time Warner Cable to go forward.”
The two sides have been unable to come to terms since midyear, Carey said. Time Warner Cable would accept federal mediation, Chief Executive Officer Glenn Britt wrote in a letter to U.S. Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, a proposal News Corp. rejected. Both sides will continue to negotiate up to the deadline, Carey said.

I just can't see this happening in the way its presented(fox just gone from my cable service tomorrow...). If it does it would be atrue "harbinger" (?) of times to come and all my multiple anti -lib rants will come back to "visit" me in the worst way,. No first amendment ;better buttress my supplies for exercising the second.

If this happens, I will drop my cable service and eliminate television as a form of media used in my home. There will be protests like never before seen by the Teaparty groups.

How does this have anything to do with the Left or Right or Middle or anything? Two businesses cant come to an aggreement and suddenly its a conspiracy? Come on, sometimes life just happens and it doesnt mean that the world is out to get you.

Of course, you are right about the business aspects. One thing the whole exercise brings out is the power of money (and ownership) to alter the current events landscape.

Whether or not it is part of a vast (fill in the blank) wing conspiracy is a different question entirely. The most straightforward publisher, one that reports the news as it happens without a slant, is going nowhere without the resources to get his news on the street.

Cable (or satellite) is a boon to those of us out in the sticks and out of range of over the air broadcast; without it, we get nothing. The downside is obvious, the carriers can influence what we see and hear. And clearly, mainstream broadcast news is no better from an editorial standpoint, the station owner gets to set editorial policy.

My point is that there can be no unbiased news programs without a commitment and support of the staff to stay balanced and not influenced by the money trail. Sponsors can and do exercise influence based on the sponsor's view of issues, it is as simple as pulling their ads. Without sponsors or some other income stream, the media outlet folds up.

Fox will carry on, they have other outlets besides Time Warner cable. Time Warner will probably continue to exist as well. It is simply a shame that T-W customers will be deprived of another source of information.

Ill agree with you, Fox is to the left. However, thats not the point. The point is that people are saying that because Fox is not going to be on Time Warner anymore that there is some big political or conspirical plot going on. Im saying that it sounds more like a business disagreement.

I know whats' in print: Yeah and it"sounds like": Obama has your best interest at heart...

Perhaps you haven't been exposed to vitriol espoused on lib sites like the daily kos??? Fox is hated with "blood and gore and veins in the teeth." and should be shutdown.

Have you never heard of the dems "fairness doctrine"?( threats of a bill to force fox to give liberals equal time on thefox network . Because they don't like fox's viewpoint.)

I guess "nemesis" is an unusual word. It means"enemy"or counter.

    S'cuse me
(????) fox is noted for presenting the single Conservative view on cable.
You know the guys "They" inherited every problem from...

    Remember dems= obama=congress = "LEFT"WING.
conservatives are associated with the republican and libertarian parties.= the political "right"...

So what your saying is that everything that happens in the world is part of a conspiracy? Nothing ever happens because it happens. SURE.

By the way. I have never understood someone being Right, or someone being Left. By saying that someone is either Right or Left you are implying that they agree with everything that group agrees with. Ill garuntee you that that isnt true.

If more than 3 people are involved, then by definition it is a conspiracy.

I believe this is in line with the Dobbs (forced) retirement.

Didn't the current administration already say something to the lines that they were at war with fox?

The more information we the people get of all sources, angles and persuassions equals a more educated populace. The censoring of a media outlet due to "monetary issues" can never be a good thing.

Should Fox broad cast for free then? We do live in a capatalist society after all. Whether you like it or not, the dollar does rule much of life. Thou im sure that will bring up another conspiracy theory.

    Of course there are shades of everything.. And no;
not everything that happens; happens because it fits some master conspiracy.
That said: major power moves are by their nature made and influenced by powerful people. That's how they stay that way.

Wiping out the only opposing viewpoint.

( after that exact thing had been called for by the dems..).It is not unreasonable to believe there are influences being applied.

I just posted an article. I'm not wiiling to file charges based on it.

Personally, no cable distributor should carry Fox or anything else News Corp produces. It's obvious the people there have an agenda and it isn't reporting the news. You either watch Fox and think they have great journalistic credibility,(and the only), or you think they're just a propaganda arm for the Ruling Classor the GOP. News Corp is also behind Disney as the world's 2nd largest media conglomerate, and 3rd in entertainment this year. Oh yeah, Rupert Murdoch also is the CEO and founder if you didn't know. Which I'm sure you did because you are at Daily Kos.
It should be our business to know that this man only became a citizen to own the company that has been as un-American as Benedict Arnold was. I think it is fishy that the Fox Entertainment Group has been a sole promoter of either Republicans or Corporations, and has been and still is %100 against President Obama and the Democrats.
But anyway, this disagreement they are having seems to settle on this little thing called price. Time Warner, located in New York, is the second biggest cable provider in this nation. So you would think price would be nothing to worry about for in-demand programs. Queue Fox News and all of it's crap that has been brought to light this year and the last.

    First
If I needed a definition, i would get a dictionary, so stop trying to act supperior. ( I had to post this now because your post that was in was edited after I had already replied to it.)

    Second
Everything in the world that happens is influenced by someone or a group of someones or by a natural event that no one has control over. Whether it is from the price of a gallon of milk (influenced by the price of fuel, price of grain, price of beef, to how much money a company wants to make) to who the president is(hopefully influenced by the american people... speaking of which, how many people who are on here and complain about President Obama voted?).

The plan now is to harrumph. Fox is "undertaking a war against Barack Obama," the White House says, and therefore it’s not going to treat Fox the same as "legitimate news organizations." That’s a harrumph. A petulant harrumph.

And a gift—to Fox. The network was out in force yesterday, basking in the White House’s disapproval. Beck and O’Reilly were nearly orgiastic. Every presidential harrumph sends their ratings through the roof.

The Obama campaign is so ass-backward that I’m tempted to surmise that the White House must purposefully want to increase the Fox glee. When Fox froths at the mouth, that makes the Obama base froth, too. The president is matching his base against the conservative one, understanding that, even if Fox’s ratings are increasing, the conservative base itself is contracting and the liberal base expanding. Or some such thesis.

But I don’t think the president is so calculating or clear-headed on this subject. Rather, he’s fulminating. He talks about Fox the same way the Clintons talked about the right-wing conspiracy. He feels similarly pissed-off and helpless in the face of it.

During the campaign he had a secret meeting with Fox chief Roger Ailes in which he blasted Ailes for basically equating him with a terrorist. After the meeting, Ailes, I am told, had a cat-who-swallowed-a-canary look. There was a recent meeting between Ailes and David Axelrod, the president’s media guru. Ailes preened and gloated and delivered his proud defense of the network and, I am told, ate Axelrod for lunch.

They’re fuming at the White House and they don’t know what to do.

Fox may be preaching to the converted and, indeed, those ranks might well be shrinking—the white conservatives aging out, the new much-less-white demographic catching up—but all the words that are used against the president, all the flies around his face, are Fox words and flies. These are painful and effective distractions.

Here’s my view: Don’t fight Fox. You can’t fight Roger Ailes—because that’s what he lives for. He lives off your rage and blood. Rather, this is what you do (please listen closely): Exploit the rift that exists between Ailes and the man he works for, Rupert Murdoch.

That rift has grown ever larger because Ailes is the only guy making money for Murdoch now. Ailes has been proven right in his down-low media strategy; Murdoch, who has staked his business acumen (and the value of his company) on his acquisition of the hoity-toity Wall Street Journal two years ago, has been proven wrong.

Here’s a program: Lavish incredible attentions on the Journal, interviews, scoops, wonderful photo ops. The WSJ needs this—Murdoch needs this. Build yourself some leverage with Mr. M. In the end, no matter the economics, Murdoch will do what’s best for the Journal—even if that means he has to discipline his cash cow, Fox.

Also: Squeeze the Hollywood and chattering class liberals. If you can get the fancy people to snub Murdoch and his wife, Wendi, that would be something they’d feel.

You literally cannot hurt Roger Ailes. But Rupert is more and more a little touchy about his standing in the world. He’s the weak link.
