Just read about the following contest on slashdot, seems they are offering a reward to an individual who can disappear for one month. http://www.wired.com/vanish/2010/02/do-you-want-to-vanish-and-win-10k/#ixzz0eg2Fmz40 They are also looking for people to track this individuals down. Mybe this should be cross-posted in the jobs section?
For communications while you hide, place a TOR connected laptop in a motel somewhere and then connect to that laptop via logmein.com (free) from somewhere else in the country. Pretty tough to find your IP for 99% of the population.
I'm already disappear-ed! See? Can you see me now? LOL!!! I have a canyon where I can disappear......on purpose, or maybe, accidentally! I think it's a lot easier for some than others.... I sit here at home, and no one even knows where I am or if I am still alive! I have an older sister that lives 1 1/2 miles from me, and she calls once every year or so, to see if I'm still around! (I dont even need a grey suit!)
To me, having this ability was always part of my survival scheme. Unfortunately, it means having another set of ID. I've been researching it. Haven't gotten there yet. What I've found is that If you're going to make a solid ID - one that can be backstopped or cross referenced against other databases, you'll probably have to spend a bit of money and make at least a few moves that are highly illegal and risky. BTW, any of the books I've picked up on "new ID" have been mostly BS. At least a few of the suggestions will put you in the slammer pronto.
In "Unintended Consequences" the main character tells his girl friend of his alias', and states it is not illegal as long as you do not attempt to defraud anyone. The problem is that when you make a fake ID using a driver's license, or a gov/state issued ID, then you are guilty of a felony in many states.
Do a search on your ancestry...etc. I found about 60 people with my exact name, some as far back as the civil war era....I can assume a dead persons identity and be relatively invisible...especially since some were deceased about the same time/year (+/- 2-5 years) of my birthdate. OR, WE ALL BECOME ILLEGALS! That'll work! Some hair dye, tanning lotion/s, and maybe a moustache.... Hey it could work! They'll NEVER know!
Most all will have "deceased" marked in the various databases. SS for sure. Not DMV though as I found out in the case of my dad. My mom is still driving cars registered to him and they never took notice!
I read an article about this once. It's not that hard to do actually. It woud take some good discipline though, be easier if you left the country too.
Saw this thread and couldn't help thinking of a line of dialog in the old Burt Reynolds movie "Sharkeys Machine " LOL
I have no doubt that I could disappear for 30 days if I wanted too... for 10 years I have worked with homeless orgs in my city. It would not be "comfortable" but would not be hard.... RJ
I agree with the previous poster. 30 days would be no problem whatsoever. I wish I had read this thread in time to apply. Of course, I have no idea of the actual contest rules. My idea would be to start with at least $1000 in cash and an atm card or two. Drive my car to a long term airport storage parking lot. walk away from airport. Catch bus to downtown. Hop bus to somewhere else. Jump freight train to somewhere else. Bus again to area where I have friends. Lay up for a while. Work for them under the table tax wise. 30 days.... no problem.... i reality i think i could stay totally gray for 6 months or longer.... if i were forced to use an atm card for any reason, it would trigger another escape and evasion period to lose any trackers. comments?
