Marlin Firearms to close next year

    By The Associated Press
    Friday, March 26, 2010 at 4:36 a.m.
NORTH HAVEN, Conn.— Marlin Firearms Co., a 140-year-old company which made a gun that was a favorite of Annie Oakley, is closing its Connecticut plant, company officials said Friday.
Workers at the plant in North Haven say they've been told all 265 employees will lose their jobs.
Jessica Kallam, a spokeswoman with Madison, N.C.'s Remington Arms Co. Inc., which owns Marlin, said the Connecticut plant will close by June 2011 and employees would be offered severance and help finding jobs. She said Marlin is relocating its manufacturing operations to an undetermined site.
Kallam could not confirm if all employees in Connecticut are losing their jobs.
She read a company statement that says Freedom Group, which owns Remington, must reduce its costs to remain competitive.
"Although long term prospects of the business look positive, economic factors beyond Freedom Group's control related to increasing costs and pricing pressures within the firearms industry are impacting the entire Freedom Group of companies," the statement said.
Remington Arms bought Marlin for nearly $42 million in 2007.
Marlin's Web site says John Marlin opened the company in 1870 in New Haven after having worked at the Colt plant in Hartford during the Civil War. The company says its lever action 22 repeater was a favorite gun of Annie Oakley.

    Well, that sucks!
I for one happen to love my Marlins....all 4 of them rascals!
Excuse me for saying this, but has anyone noticed a "trend" in this country?
Not everyone can go on unemployment, and still survive!
Maybe "we" can get a "save Marlin's day going?
I'd buy another 1 or 2, and IF we get more people to buy them, ...
Nah, just ramblin' on...trying to forstall the ineviatble I suppose.....

I have nine Marlin rifles - all but my 336 is a rimfire. Hmmm..... maybe these old Marlins will appreciate in value....... yeah, along with the umpteen millions others.......

But I do love shooting them. Back when great guns were still Steel & Wood!

Bound to happen. The industry is moving and making a sh*t ton of money. The problem is that Marlin is not producing the new mainstream.

Winchester did the same. Ruger nearly did but revamped their product line.

What is there that would make you say this?

It's probably obvious and I'm just not seeing it, low wages, no labor laws, old manufacturing plants..... [dunno]

Serbia has a well-developed firearms production industry, and labor would be a lot cheaper. The Czech Republic would be a possible bet too. Even Mother Russia. Remington and Winchester already are marketing Russian-made rifles under their banner.

But, internet buzz has it that Marlin will move to SC or NC here in the States. [dunno]

They're is a very slim chance the plant could stay where it is, but most likely will be relocated to any of three existing facilities owned by the parent company Freedom Group located in Kentucky, North Carolina, or upstate New York.
My first gun was a Model 57. Still like new and still have the box.
    Call me Snake.

My first rifle was a Marlin 915Y with a 4x scope. Love it and will pass it to my first nephew. My sisters need to get busy! I'll pass it to my youngest niece otherwise. She's due the last week of May! [applaud]
