Oh how I just love to shout the obvious at the TV news broadcasters.
    .
It seems that the Israeli Navy interdicted an attempted intrusion by sea to the Gaza strip. As Israeli commandos stormed the ship, shots were fired and 10 or more of those aboard the ship (not commandos) were killed.
    .
The Israelis claimed they were fired upon and returned fire.
    .
Others claim the Israelis fired first.
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    hmmmm let see.
    .
At no time did anyone ask if those on the ship were indeed armed.
    .
If those on the ship brandished weapons in a menacing manner.
    .
If they exchanged fire with the Israelis.
    .
    -------------------------------------------------------------
I have no doubt from what I heard and didn't hear that those on the ship had firearms. That they exchanged fire with the Israeli commandos. That they knew exactly who and what the Israeli commandos were and why they were there, and that those on the ship were breaking Israeli law and that they would most likely be arrested and detained.
    .
This should be no surprise to anyone
    .
It should also be a lesson to us and others. If for whatever reason you choose to take up arms against a well trained military force, you better damn well have a good plan and enough of a trained resistance force to take the day. ... or, plan on having your butt kicked and things getting seriously bloody quickly.
    .
    JMHO of course.

the ship was in international waters and the Israelis had no right to even approach then, much less stop and board the ships. conversely, the aid flotilla had every right to take up arms to defend themselves from unprovoked aggression.

You must get the majority of your info from Firedoglake. .... plus I would submit you are prejudiced against Israel as I am predujiced against the peace loving non-violent PLO. ... I would suggest we are at an impasse and that the majority of this discussion is over.
    .
I considered my final paragraph to be the most important and pertinent statement to all of us here.

Going by that, the pirate interceptions around the horn of africa in open ocean is also illegal. Preposterous.

im not much of a fan of israel or the PLO. they are both terrorist organizations/states with only the barest of claims to legitimacy. the Palestinians at least have the excuse of fighting way out of their weight class.

the difference is that pirates are out attacking ships. the aid flotilla was carrying a bunch of food and concrete.

So they say, but I watched video where it was said that Israeli diplomats, realizing this was a public relations nightmare (the blockade, even before this incident), offered to escort the flotila pierside in Israel where they could check for contraband before allowing the aid goods to be transported to Gaza. It was a forced issue as a publicity stunt. No points to either side as far as I am concerned.

Resisting the urge to participate in this one.

All I will say is this.... oh well, 10 less that can create problems in the future.

Lol, why resist the urge, I almost never do....lol.
    .
actually the whole point was the obvious biased news slant, and my final warning paragraph.
    .
after actually researching the whole thing, I had a little different take on it.
    .
The blockade has been in effect for sometime. This was not news. The blockade was a direct result of PLO contraband smuggling into Gaza of materials and arms than no way could be considered benign.
    .
If it was truly just aid as in food and medical supplies, etc the Israelis had made overtures to allow the "aid supplies" to be offloaded in Israeli ports, where they were even willing to provide transport of such said "benign aid supplies" to Gaza. (sounds like one hell of a deal to me).
    .
problem is, the PLO wanted to make a statement about the blockade, and wanted a conflict.
    .
Here is where I have a problem with the Israelis; The morons almost got their heads handed to them, They clearly lost control of the situation, before finally regaining control. Where the hell was their professionalism.
    .
    And so here we are.

Even the best of military units can get complacent and lose their edge - when that happens in a situation like this, people get killed.

Lucky they weren't Russians - that boat would've simply disappeared.....

There was more of it in the media, saying essentially the same thing. An escort to the port where this stuff could be handled in the agreed upon (even if agreement was dictated by the Israelis) manner and offloaded "properly." The intent was a blockade run with probable contraband. The PLO (and the idiotic collection of hangers on from Europe) had to want a confrontation, or they would have just gone about their normal business instead of bugling about how unjust the whole situation is. Unjust? Maybe, but invited by continuously throwing explosive materials across the wire.

Agree, no points for either side on this particular exercise.

Probably true. Probably the boat owner. Talk about a money drain. Jokingly, a hole in the water you pour money into. I can say this with much experience on the matter. At present I own 3 boats. Need I say more? ..... didn't think so.....lol[boozingbuddies]

 Only took me one boat to figure it out. Watterya, slow? [own2] (For some reason, my ex wanted it when I left. Last time she operated it, she hit the rocks. Dunno where it is now --.)
