Hey as long as we're talkin' new releases we just got "book of Eli"
A classic post apocalyptic wanderer of the fallout scarred wasteland story with a nice twist. kinda one dimensional.(definitely not academy award material) but common survivalist fiction; probably better as a rental or wait until netflix releases it. I buy a dvd for the"special features"; here Special features are very limited and IMHO not worth the price of the dvd.

    I love this movie.

It is true that it has a typical religious ending (the twist was pretty cool though), but despite that it conveys a very important message about the power of control and the real truth behind religion (if you are wise enough to see it).

    A definite must see.

Is it really that good? I've heard the ending is cheesy.

Brokor brought out the main thrust of the plot...Interesting enough in its own right. The highwaymen( cannibals), bartering and brutality, are just window dressing.

I thought it was a great movie. I really liked the end and the twist.

It's funny that Broker got on his usual soap box about religion and control. The whole plot line indicates who is really in control. That's the beautiful thing about both this movie and real life.

I hope I didn't derail this topic like I do so many, but religion is a central topic in the movie and so has a place in the discussion of such.

    On control....
A fool thinks that giving into established norms is a form of control (whether it be the 10 commandants or others). What a spiritually mature individual will tell you is that it is not a more oppressive sense of being gained.... it's true freedom that is reaped. If you don't understand this, it's probably because you haven't "stuck around" long enough to find out what it's really about. Hence the bitterness....

We have a sense of ourselves and God because He gave it to us (Romans Ch 1). To a non-believer, having someone else in control is frightening. Rejection is the result.

    WHATEVER....SSDD.

Derailed? :That overpowering sound you hear is the deafening roar of destroyed rollingstock.
So any dissenter who doesn't"see" what you "see" has obviously not matured; ipso facto you however have attained superior spiritual maturity. Because you agree with your obviously correct viewpoint. Spare us.
This is what causes these threads to flare.
    "The bible is obviously true!"
    Oh How so?
"why it says so; right here in the bible( Pelopenesians chap 2)".

    "Well... Isn't that "special" hmmm?"

I wish you to Enjoy your faith, take comfort from your faith to the fullest extant you are able;.
What I don't understand is why "You people" can't seem to do it without insulting every one else.
    Dripping with moral superiority.
    'nuff.

    (Time already for another"sabbatical ??")

    Understanding "you/us people":
"For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men."

I can't speak for HiSpeed, but he would probably agree with me that our "moral superiority" is like dung or filthy rags because we have no righteousness of our own.

Watched the movie, liked the ending. Also liked the part where the bad guy in the flick finally gets his hands on the "Book" and can't read it...

"soap box"? lol, nice. I only support [freedom], not slavery -if you must know. ;) And your point is made. Thanks for that.
I don't think it's derailed as long as you talk about the movie -religion is a part of it, but like I said before, it takes wisdom to realize the nature of humans to see the real theme.
Freedom is not defined and ordained by scripture; in the movie, it is a tool for control (or) it is to be shelved on the island of Alcatraz for posterity so that all those who wish to be enlightened in the ways of the past (nuclear holocaust) need only read the "Holy Bible" to realize where humanity went terribly wrong. The book of Eli was brought to the west so that humanity may learn the errors of their ways, so as not to repeat the same mistakes. If, as you will suggest, the bible were used to preach unto others how to act, what to think and believe, then the book of Eli would have served that purpose in the town full of people that Eli first encountered. Instead, it was brought to an isolated island of higher learning, a final bastion of knowledge -NOT preached from the pulpits, but shelved away.
Indeed. Only a vulgar mind would insist on its own way. Many tend only to see what they want so desperately to see, and fail to recognize the patterns in life as natural or man-made, but instead they will choose to believe in a fable because it suits them. In the movie, Eli carried a book with him that was braille, not written in text. It is only assumed that he may have been blind -but in 30 years, he could have taught himself how to read braille. He also might not have known how to read braille at all...and only recited what he heard as a child and young adult -and later reciting his own "version". There may also be a scientific explanation since he called the nuclear war a "flash" -not a description a blind man would necessarily use. Additionally, he claimed that a voice told him to bring the book west -this is pure revelation, it happened to he alone and we are to take him on his word. Only a religious believer would easily assume that his claim is true and that he heard the voice of "God", it is not a provable instance, so we must rely upon the "facts" presented in the movie. We know that he traveled for a great amount of time; 30 years since the "flash". He was a teenager when this all occurred, so he may very well have his own reasons for doing what he did. The simple direction of "west" did not deliver him to the tiny island -he found it on his own and possibly with some help from the girl, we do not know. He found it. And once there, he dictated what he had been reading for 30 years. The book was then titled and properly shelved. Make of it what you will. The end.
The Bible was written by men, and again in the end of the movie. To claim that some omnipotent being illustrated his grand plan for humanity is strictly a myth, and is proven by the remnants of history that have not been burned by the Church. In the movie, all was lost - a sign of a new beginning, Igna Natur renovatur integra -all of nature is renewed by fire, but if we humans do not classify our history and remember our mistakes, then there can never be a renewal.

Instead of taking this Hollywood production as simply being a type of religious edification of Christianity, another way to perceive it is to "read between the lines" and come up with a new perspective -hopefully one which does not include repetitious stagnation and mythical prejudices which have served despots and tyrants so well over the millennia (see also the townsfolk of pirates for an answer).

Thanks for inspiring me to extrapolate even further than I really had to. It was soothing.
