AGAIN, true freedom is sometimes obtained by servitude. Ah, I see you are so wise. Well, if you are referring to the nature of the town and the use that Carnegie has for The Book, this alludes nothing to true Christianity. This is your central theme on religion and Christianity. While religion can be used for control, so can about everything. Is this why the bitter, confrontational attitude about anything religiously based? That is a pretty ridiculous over-reaction. I have been to a lot of churches over the years. Most all I would call home. Never have I seen any sort of humanistic spin with some crazy plot to control people and rule the world. Just good people with faith, exercising their FREEDOM. Freedom is ordained and defined by scripture. Bondage to sin is the form of slavery that is described in the Bible (Gal 3). Freedom is obtained through faith and belief. This freedom then leads to servitude to the Lord. This is what Christians will refer to as a "calling". Eli had one. If you have any doubt on why the book was moving west or why, you clearly have a distorted view of the world. Those are some powerful glasses to distort the obvious. I would like to see a poll. Who thinks Eli is blind? Who thinks Eli has a higher protection? Who thinks Eli has a true calling? I don't have a 100% influence of Christians in my life. I have to say that you the first person Brokor to distort the plot and call into question what seems obvious. Common sense. Oh.... and the Book is not shelved, it is saved from man's destruction by Him. Man tried to stamp out God.... how did that work out? Maybe a lesson to learn here. Covered this earlier. You have to take the whole movie at what it states. If you don't believe Eli is blind, the plot is crap. What would be the point. Regardless, the divine protection that is evidently taking place would still be present if he could see. That was a hell of a lot of lucky dodges and shots not have something special going on here. And again, the Book was saved from the nasty little hands of man. Arguing this with you would be pointless because you have no belief in the Bible. If you did, I could easily indicate from scripture why the Bible is God's word. But, because you object to the whole thing as a "fable", I will simply allude to the fact that for it's age, the Bible is the most accurate historical document ever written. Overtime, it has changed less than most historical texts that were considered "fact" in their day. If you are a normal human and can see a God's fingerprint everywhere as alluded in Rom 1:18-20, then it's not to far of a stretch to realize that divine protection is the reason why the Bible is still around and the #1 selling Book of all time List of best-selling books - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This may be the same divine protection that Eli experiences?? I could say the same about worldly prejudice and don't get me started on repetitious stagnation. This same tired argument comes from you at every religious debate. There’s definitely a few,”oh that’s cool,” moments but you shouldn’t really be cheering for what’s going on. They still show it in a way where all of it still comes off as savage and not exploitation. Gary Whitta: Absolutely, I think that’s another… The violence in the film is obviously something people are talking a lot about. Some people say this is a Christian film and I don’t think it is, but clearly it’s a film about faith. To have a guy with a bible in one hand and a machete in the other hand is going to get people talking one way or the other. The fights in the film, a lot of it comes from the way Albert designed those fights. He had very specific ideas visually in his head for what he wanted... Controversy grows money at the box office. From believers and non-believers. Truth is, it's made to appeal to both. Watch it and decide for yourself.
Try not to contradict yourself. I was speaking about a movie. You are talking about your personal life. I never made that connection -you did. As usual, you are defending your beliefs in true religious spirit. I feel sorry for you, and by the looks of your demeanor, all you can share is contempt and animosity. I believe that in the movie, the aftermath of the nuclear war was the lesson to be learned. You have your opinion and I have mine. We disagree, this is no surprise. You believe that this movie was about "God" and man, and I choose not to ignore the fact that Eli did not give the book to the men in the town, but rather the isolated island library to be placed on a SHELF. I guess as far as we are concerned, this must be a moot point. Again, try to focus on the movie here, not your personal religious beliefs. To fool believers so easily? (the viewers not the characters) *gasp* And the plot thickens. Precisely. Is something special going on here? We see what we choose to see. This is part of the magnificence of the movie. Precisely right again. Look what happened last time. It's a real book. The content is an excellent tool to control the hearts and minds of humans. If I were a "believer" as you stated, I could easily fall for anything, that much is also true. Here you go again with your real life comparison, taking a movie and making it into your own holy crusade. Very well then, I shall momentarily entertain... We do know that there were many books of supposed prophets floating around up until 312 CE when the Council of Nicea decided which books were scripture and which ones were burned. Thanks to the notorious habit of early Christian leaders of destroying books/scrolls, we may never know what doctrine existed before the Council of Nicea. Oh, what wicked webs we weave. Ad hominem. Indeed. And with respect I must add that I have no intention of directly insulting any religious folk around here -but it is a two-way street. Religious tolerance is just the same as un-religious tolerance, as we who define ourselves and live without "the book" offer nothing to people but ourselves and our good deeds. If somebody wants to quote scripture and try to force their beliefs on me, I will not hesitate to remind them that I am not for sale. Now, if you can live YOUR life knowing that, then we are fine. An opinion on the movie is to be expected. Keeping the discussion civil is tough to do, but not impossible. For Tango: I was comfortably surprised by the scene at the house when the bad guys had Eli at gunpoint and he told them that he was "untouchable"...and then -*BANG!* reality check. Only the assistance of the girl he befriended ended up saving him and helping him to reach a destination he was comfortable with. We see several dualities throughout this movie, which is why I find it so well played.
Wow this thread goes ever onward. I agree with brokor above; I am not out looking to make enemies; burn bibles or crosses. Go about your business feel part of the "secret club"; but realize if everything you post has a few lines of("Meaningless") scripture to corroborate; ie. "Bowling pins matches? Well I recommend the 1911"... cooper chapter2 12-18: And Skelton said to Springfield: "Yeah though you walk through the contest of the bowling pins; May the spirit of St. john the browning carry you safely through your trial with naught a failure to feed nor eject; for the DA auto is a blasphemy upon his name".. Well you get the idea.. it is not only lost on those of us who say:" yada yada"..personally It pushes me farther and farther away from ever picking up and reading the "book of Eli". But; Even with all my imperfections ," sins",addictions, compulsions (I even go so far as to toss in a little ego) I lead a pretty comfortable life.:and am not above looking "up" occasionally and offering some honest "thanks" in the case I am completely wrong on the whole issue. Does anyone hear?( does it matter if I am not trying to "curry favors") Color me "agnostic". In a world of atrocities I remain unconvinced.
Ok.. couldn't wait for it from netflix.. so I ordered in FiOS. GREAT flick.. I never would have guessed his "state of being". I thought the balance between religion as a tool of faith and guidance as opposed to a tool of oppression was well balanced; enough to show the dangers of both. A well put together movie. 4stars. I would have given it 5, but it needed a touch more background story and a touch more action. This movie could have very well have been a 3 hour flick.
