I went for a good walk in the country yesterday and whilst out and about I wanted to collect some pine resin and cut myself a piece of willow from a fallen tree to make a Kuksa [cup].

I cut the wood using my Swedish pack saw and then split it with my Puukko in the woods to keep the weight down.

So today I got to making it using only hand tools I,d have with me if I was in the woods for more than a few days.

Well apart from the brass lanyard tube that is[IMG]

I think it needs a little more sanding yet.

I think I'm going to take up a new hobby. What's a good wood carving knife?

Where are all the bandaids and cuts and scars on your hands? Mine would look like a meat grinder accident by the time I got done carving that!

    LMAO[lolol]

Ive had my fair share of cuts though but im a little more carefull these days and carry a good first aid kit with butterfly sutures in it as its not good when your camping in the woods and get yourself a good deep cut,I know this as Its happened to me before:oops::cry:

Are you sure you want to use it as a cup? I would put it on the wall, as an art object. :)

How much (say in ounces) will it hold? And what good does the peanut oil do?

No good just looking at it,its got to be used;)

I just had to go measure,it holds 4 FL oz,just enough for a strong coffee;)

Peanut oil works in the same way as using linseed oil on a knife handle,it protects the wood, water proofs it,brings out the grain and it user friendly as long as you haven't got a nut allergy.

I use the Eric Frosts Mora spoon knife from Sweden.

Its a good knife and available in the USA.

'Bout half a cup for me. The oil imparts no flavor?

There is some maple around here, might have to give it a try.

I like my coffee small but very strong and cannot abide big cups of weak coffee.

Not that Ive noticed but there again how strong I have my coffee I doubt Id notice anyway.

But I think I would notice the flavour of linseed oil.

have you ever burned your bowls out with coals?

  19. sticks65

    sticks65 Monkey++

Yes but would rather carve them as there less chance of the wood spliting as it can when burn't out.
