    Worst traffic jam ever? Gridlock spans 60 miles - World news - Asia-Pacific - China - msnbc.com

Okay, we all have BOBs in the trunk, we have a supply of water on hand, etc. How well, are you prepared to hang out on the highway for a week or more? Do you hang out, do you head for the bush (article does not describe enviro)? What say you?

Personally, I am not well equipped to wait it out, nor would I want to. I would fear tempers and civil unrest. Typically, for my day-to-day driving, I have a medium fanny pack, and sidearm for bug out. Current temps do not require much else.

HOWEVER, if I was stuck there. I know that hike out is at least 30 miles. While I could manage it on my own, its going to be tough with the wife and three kids. I'magonna think about this one for a while ...

Depends on a situation...Generally, It's extremely unwise to wait in the middle of the road for a long time in SHTF situation. Depending on SHTF would be my waiting period. If it's something like nukes coming and road are gridlocked, I'd dump the car, continue on foot and find as best cover as possible....Honestly, I can't think of a situation that would justify sitting in a car, waiting, for days...If a gridlock isn't resolved in few hours, chances are it's there to stay....jm2c...

I agree with you about other impending threats, but what do you think about this particular scenario. Basically, its a HUGE construction delay.

I have a Get Home Bag (GHB) that I keep in my vehicle.

    Inside is:
    Water
    MRE
    Poncho
    lighter
    magnesium fire starter
    pencil
    duct tape
    plyers
    compass
    candle
    GPS
    knife
    $100
    Credit card
    parachute cord
    space blanket
    first aid kit

I could make it a few miles / day on that - but 9 days?

Exactly so, as aided by the entrepreneurs that are scalping for noodles. If you know you're headed into a delay like that (or think you might) what would you take besides a bridge deck and pocket full of renminbi or yuan?

Full marks to the noodle vendors, they've grabbed an opportunity that will last as long as their stocks. (But if the trucks can't get thru to restock them, what then?)

If it's few hours wait, up to 6, I'd wait...anything more, I'm moving...One week wait? No way! If normal walk is 5 km/hour, and 50 km out, in 24 hours tops I'm home. Risk of waiting is greater then walking.

I made the mistake of going up to my land ( area) on Memorial day...I won't do that again! It's bad enough on a weekend to try to drive out of Phoenix some 150 miles, but I had never seen anything like that before (excluding being in Los Angeles in 1987!) The traffic was beyond dead. There were a number of accidents, and on a 2 lane road ( they call it a highway here!) it was merciless. I was "trapped" for 4 hours. I just pulled oof the road and about 2 hours into just sitting there enjoying the heat, a Highway Patrol Officer came by and asked if I was ok....I pulled out as sitting there caused my engine to overheat, and I don't even have air conditioning in that van!
Those that kept their engines and AC running, soon were overheating like mad!
The Highway Patrol Officer joined me and we sat awhile and watched the mayhem .....On any given weekend here, I can see the cars backing up to a standstill on the freeway, every weekend it's the same thing.
I can't imagine trying to get out of town in any real emergency!

Huh...that sucks...Fortunately, my car has perfect A/C, and never overheats...no matter how long it runs...

The Massachusetts turnpike between Worcester and Boston sucks. Perhaps the worst traffic ever aside from L.A. and China.

Obviously, for you US guys, bugging out would suck big time...If I was in the US, I would try to leave my house only if a nuke was coming straight for me...Or a tsunami/hurricane/tornado...meaning if I absolutely must...
In my country, the worst possible jam would last about 45 minutes tops!

Reminds me of what happened during hurricane Rita.

Got stuck The weekend before Christmas heading north on I95.
Just as we were about to hit the DC beltway, it came to a complete stop while snow was coming down.

2 kids in the car and already 8 hours put in we decided to stop.

Fortunately, I have a friend that lives about 45 minutes West. I put in a call, we pulled off, drove over there and crashed.
