Hoyt Ultratec Compound Bow This guy offered me a trade. I'm not sure if it's a good deal. I know next to nothing about modern compound bows. Last one I used was Bear circa 199something.
As far as I can see from the pic, it has a sort of hybrid cams, which for me is better than two-cam system...Personally, I prefer single cam, or no-cam-both idler wheels compounds since thay can't go out of tune. Worst for tuning is two-cam, I'd say... It depends what you're trading...For beginners no-cams or single-cam bows are best... If you can get it for a reasonable exchange, I would get it... Eww a scope. He spent some bucks on the mods, but the bow isn't worth more than $350 used. Why doesn't he say what he will trade for? Is that some kind of Craigslist concept?
Ok, I turned him down. Everywhere I found a used Hoyt Ultratec, it was in the $300-450 price range. He was using $700 as "his" value. So, let me present this question. BNMB's posted link left me with more questions than answers. I want to get a compound bow in the near future. I want one that is easy maintenance, simpler, and of course a good value. By the nature of things, that generally leaves me with older models. I would also like the ability to re-string it at home. Any suggestions?
I can't give you a company, but I'd go with no-cams or one-cam model, up to 60lb strength, full limbs (not splitted). That's what I have...fiberglass bow, 60lb, no-cams, full limbs. Maintenance to the minimum...Only thing simpler than this is old style bow...
This is a Solocam. It's available locally, which is why i bring it up: Z7 Would I be wrong for going so modern.... in terms of general maintenance? I want the easiest to maintain. Should I go with something older?
I have owned and hunted with bows since 1977. Maintenance on bows is easy, you can buy a jig and some material and tie your own strings. Timing a bow is the most critical ( virtually single cams time them selves) next to setting knock height. Buy some spare bushing for the wheels and a bow press and the above and you are set. Watch for cam lean when you see it or can measure it, replace the bushings. What are you going to use it for? I guess that would be the biggest question I have.
Deer hunting is the primary use. I checked some tutorials online and and does appear to be quite easy. I looked up a few string jigs and bow presses. Let me send this guy an offer and see if we can come to some sort of an agreement. Thanks all for your help. I wasn't sure where this was going when I started, but now I seem to have a general idea in what I am looking for.
