I'm thinking about buying a Springfield XD .45

I would like some input on the XD. I'm not a Glock fan and I've had good experiences with Springfield 1911's. I'm not knocking Glocks, I just can't deal with the grip angle and found the XD to have a natural, good feeling grip. I know that they can survive the "Glock torture test" and that they supposedly have a better trigger but other than that, I don't know anything about them. Any info would be helpful.

Cap'n, there are a couple guys that have them on this site. You might do a search, some posts should turn up that speak well of the XD. I don't have one, so can't speak to the subject.

    Welcome aboard ---

I love my XD-9. It disassembles easily and in few parts. Very accurate, reliable, and rugged. I love the XD Gear, especially the loader assist. Low maintenance handgun, very practical and worth the $$.

I had a 9mm and .40 cal. I am sure the .45 follows suit. I liked it. Not much at all to complain about. Accurate enough, reliable, good pistol.

XD .45 has been pretty popular among the Springfield crowd. When the XDm came out, a lot of people didn't buy because they didn't have .45 cal; however...

A couple months ago SA finally came out with the XD(m) .45, so I'd check it before you buy the XD. I have the XDm in .40sw and am impressed with its feel, accuracy, and features. Check their ads to see all the extra stuff the "M" version has.

I have 2 XD-45's and love 'em! Especially love the Compact model that lets me carry a 10-rd mag or a 13-rd mag. Hopefully soon I will buy a XD(m) in 45!

Time to stop thinking and got get it. My wife likes the XD's better than Glocks, I like Glocks.
My wife has the XD-9 & XDM-9. If you stick with the .45's then you can go with the "compact" model, shorter grip, but the same barrel length (I believe, or at least close to the same length).

What's the difference between the XDm and the XD? I haven't shot an XD but one of the guys in our club uses a XDm in 9mm for production matches.

XDm is the "Match" version. Different trigger, grip and barrel I think. Check springfields sight, that would give the best answers

I have XD 45 Tactical. Love it. I shoot it better than all the others. A little hard to conceal....still love it.

I have a couple of the XD .45's. Love them. Accurate, reliable, very, very easy to break down. The original XD's are still quite a bit cheaper than the XDM. All of my girls either are, or will be armed with XD .45's. They like them as well. I recently gave my 18 yr. old her own 4-inch. She loves it. Buy a gun and protect your daughter, but buy a gun for her, train her and she can protect herself.

I love my XDs and my XDM. The grip on both is so much better for me than my Glock. My brother in law has the XD45 and I can tell you that the recoil was a lot "sharper" than I was expecting from it.

I love my XD 45. I have the compact model which is like having two pistols in one. A shorter 10 rnd mag for concealed carry and a longer 13 rounder makes it the same as the service model.

I chose it over the Glock because it had the same grip angle as my 1911. I don't like the angle on the Glocks.

The XDM is the match model and from what I understand has tighter tolerances, among other things, so that it is not quite as good of a combat pistol. But may be better for competition. Me, I want a pistol that will go to hell, come back and still function. So the XD is for me, over a tight match type pistol.

I feel lazy for not posting this before concerning the differences between the XD and XDm. With some of the differences listed, the XD might have those features, but the XDm has "more" or thought to be better:
    • Hammer forged barrel
    • Improved takedown (no trigger pull, much safer)
    • Improved contour frame
    • More slide serrations
    • Lock-texture grip
    • Shorter trigger reset
    • Better corrosion resistance (melonite)
    • Higher capacity magazines (my .40 holds 16)
    • Better sights
    • Better magazine release
    • Interchangeable backstraps
    • Picatinney rail
These were taken from here. It's definitely not a "match" pistol, although you can make it into one.

I usually carry mine with me where ever I go with two extra magazines. That works out to 49 rounds available: (16 x 3) + 1. I'm not a match shooter or anything, but I'm able to shoot some tight groups easily.

Having owned 2 SAI XDs (in 9mm and 40 S&W) and 3 Glocks (in .45ACP and 9mm), I have to say it would come down to price. Both are great guns. I don't think you could wrong with either.

The Glock might be cheaper if they are running some Mil discount program, but the XD is generally cheaper all day long. Of course, you could get a used trade in Glock (maybe in .45ACP) at a far better deal than any new XD or Glock. It will work fine. Glocks run for like a kabillion rounds.

The XD was my first gun. I did have some issues with my gun (but in S/A's defense, I bought one of the very first guns out) but sent it back to the factory and they made it right. (The slide rusted -- in August in OK!! and I had problems with the ejector pin. Seems like there was something else too but I can't recall what it was right now.)

The more I shot the more my grip and stance changed and now I shoot Glocks for a couple of reasons, the most important being there are a lot of guns at this house and ease of maintenance, backstock of parts, reloading, is just made much easier when everything is consolidated.

So, all in all, I wasn't UNHAPPY with the XD at all. It is just more convenient for me to shoot a Glock.
