We're getting ready to do some upgrades to the site and mainly a full upgrade of the sm.com side of things. We've had that crappy picture of a suppressed .22 taken through a NV monocular up for way too long. I had just gotten that pistol http://www.survivalmonkey.com/DSC01985 (Medium).JPG

We're looking for an image that can be used on the front page of the site and that best describes Survival. Here's the catch, It can't just be a Google Image cut and paste because it will be the representation of Survival Monkey to the outside world.

Anyone have anything or any ideas?

We've got a Leatherman Wave multi-tool to send to the person who submits the image we select.

    Just thinkin' out loud, here:

What about some photos already on our site, submitted by members, of their BOB's or kits or day packs or related stuff. Maybe select 10-20 submissions from active members and make a poll thread for the entire membership to choose from.

That might be a little way of saying "Thanks" to those who were kind enough to share with us what we ought to have, or what different setups look like.

I know I've benefited from those photos (worth a thousand words, ya' know ;)).

My thought is get someone who can draw to make an original.

A monkey in center with slung firearm, standing in middle foreground,

flanking him would be a garden, and provisions etc., and in the background community buildings, flag, church, school, etc.

Also have a grasshopper in the right background hopping away and some ants in front left foreground.

Sunny on left over the ants and storm clouds coming in over the way the grasshopper is going.

    If I could only draw.

    Slug.

Great idea. Doesn't really matter to me where they come from so long as we are free to use it. A public poll is also a great idea and we can set that up after we get some submissions to this thread.

Original artwork would be the best choice of all!

A montage of existing pix works for me. An artist, I ain't. The monkey needs some prominence, eh?

One Picture May Not Be Enough

I agree that a montage or a series of fades from one image to the next may be better at conveying the survival message.

There are so many "necessary" messages to convey that I doubt one image is up to that task.

Firearms, Food, Shelter, Water, and a host of other concerns. You might want to do maybe one or two seasonal changes of montages or those fades from one image to another. That would provide a much richer visual impact and may be an effective springboard for topics of current interest or perhaps something that the moderator would like to have covered in more depth.

I can normally nail this sort of thing pretty quick but it is tough to create one image that captures it all. I don't want to do the cliché mushroom cloud superimposed over a cityscape.

I agree a montage would be best but if we needed just one image, would it be best to just go a little more general with an image of a hunk of meat roasting over a campfire or something?

Panhead: While I like the picture, it's a 'fail' for what we're looking for.

If we only get one real picture, you're the winner of the Leatherman Wave! Come on... It cuts, it pinches, it files.

Nice. I actually tossed up a shot of of a flint/fire to get it going. I still have some tweaking to do but wanted to work on it last weekend. Didn't really have any real submissions at that time.
