I went to visit my Mom yesterday and she wanted me to cut down a dead honey suckle so I thought hummm I can use this So today I made fire by friction using it and found that honeysuckle like bamboo has all the components to make fire in one plant. Here is a link to the post on my blog. http://sticksblog-sticks.blogspot.co...make-fire.html Thanks for looking and you are all welcome to subscribe
Very awesome stick. In the SE USA, we have honey suckle everywhere. I will definitely file that one away in the ole' brain for later use. I am still having the damnedest time getting Sotol to ember with a hand drill. I am about to start trying different fire boards to see if a slightly harder wood may work better. If that doesn't work, I think I will seek instruction in the hand drill. I really want to master it, but it is a ton tougher than bow and drill.
I really like the socket in your knife handle That's a sign of excellence right there! And about the hand drill since Al brought it up...if you notch the top of your drill stick and place a few strings of the innards of a paracord through it with a loop at each end, you can hold the stick down with your thumbs and not have to worry about your hands taking all the heat because your hands will be in the same place with most of the friction being diverted. I learned that from a special forces guy on the tube: YouTube - Man Woman Wild - Botswana (part 2)
WOW, I'm shocked! Something useful learned from that show. I watched part of one episode, the wife and I both rolled our eyes and decided not to waste the brain power on it. Guess we were wrong, though I still don't know if I can sit through the "drama" of that show. That is a neat little trick though. FYI, I tried to start a fire this weekend using the bow method, big failure on my part. It's been WAY too long since I started a fire with sticks. Gonna hafta practice some more.
Nice...The few times I lit fire with sticks, I used the rope-thumbs method...but it was long time ago. I like this method because with the bow you have less control. When moving bow left-right, very often the stick flies out of bottom hole. You have much more control with rope-thumbs method...at least I do...
I used a bowdrill to start this fire. Ive not done a hand drill yet but that is a really good tip to know, thanks.
still working on it newbie question i know, but how long on average does it take to get an ember going with the drill? (I know, it depends on wood, bow, weather, and all that stuff), just an average. I never could get one to work in the scouts, but that was a long time ago. Thanks in advance Scott
Huh...trick question...fastest I ever did it was about 2 minutes with everything previously set up...
Why was it a trick question? OK, the fastest you've done it is 2 min. The question was "on average" how long does it take. The few times I've done it, its taken about 5 min or so, with a few times taking much longer.
My mistake...ment to say tricky...because sometimes you get it fast, sometimes you give up...hard to give average...maybe about 5 min.
