Well almost. Awhile back I was researching gardening. I've always been the kind of guy who is well intentioned with growing my own food but the execution, well ... it all seems like too much work and in the end something else takes priority. If this sounds like you, or you're just looking for a different, dare I say better way to grow your next garden then you might want to check this out. GLOBAL BUCKETS Global Buckets is a gardening system developed by two teens from Boulder Colorado. Here are the benefits of their system. Each garden or "Global Bucket" is made from two food grade 5 gallon pails All you need are the two pails, a few drill bits, some pipe and a plastic bag Very low water usage as evaporation rates are drastically reduced compared to gardening in raised beds or the earth NO weeding! (none) Cheap to set up (you can get 5 gallon food grade pails for free from restaurants who have to get rid of these things all the time. The rest of the components are cheaaaap) With little (mostly self) watering and no weeding the maintenance on these is very low They yield an impressive amount of vegetables for their cost, time and space they take up Anyways, a video is worth a thousand of my words so just go check it out! I started 4 buckets last spring and was impressed with what I got from them .I didn't use the wicking system but I think I will next year just to see how it works !! I also have a 2'x2'x10' flower box that I grow in,it also doubles as bullet absorber for the front room !! LOL
Nice. I never thought of that. Could be a very viable solution for a bug out boat or any other situation with confined space and challenges relating to "workable land" for veggie production.
Tomatoes and peppers and I canned 4 qts.of the tomatoes and we ate the peppers .Maybe next year I'll do 8 buckets and see what happens . My family lives close and this was just experiment to see what could be done but I think with a small green house ya could have vegetables year round. We also have 1acre garden at my daughters place !!
Sounds like a pretty fine haul from 4 buckets. We're expecting a lot of snow this year (that's what "they" say) so I've got a ways to go before I can conduct my own experiment! Winter should be fun but I'm itching for Spring already.
We're not suppose to get alot of snow but get really cold temps !! I did use some of the chicken excrement to increase the growth of the plants . LOL Trying my hand at smoking a turkey today after the rework of the smoker to run on NG. Be back in a bit !!
Fun awesome idea plus I have all the materials except for the solo keg party cup but I can get one. My first question was, "won't the toxins from the plastic & PVC leech into the soil?" I went to the youtube and saw that someone also asked the same question- also in the comments I saw: True or false? pvc with the numbers 1, 2, 4, 5 are safe pvc with the number 3, 6, 7, is toxoic toxins are (3) polyvinle choloride , vinyl (6) polysterene , styrofoam (7) polycarbonate (main) and other misc OR- PE piping. This is made with the same safe plastic that you see with the recycling logo with the number "2" in it. BTW- I just checked- Homer buckets are 2 HDPE Issue or not? (Hydroponic growers probably know this one) How do you guarantee that the roots won't grow down into the cup and the reservoir. Where they would rot from standing in water. My suggestion is put a layer or 2 of screen in the bottom of the soil container. This guy has the same set up but added bamboo poles to accommodate climbers.
Bump! Great for people who want an easy growing method. If you live in an apartment with a balcony you can still have fresh vegetables. This is simple, low cost and takes up little space. I will be having about four of these on my back deck.
