    Nice work, Fish

That is a beautiful bit of craftmanship, Fish....I can see that you and Bear are going to get on well....the talented usually recognise good work when they see it. Briar makes a very handsome looking handle.

Good to see you sharing some of your work...it may spark a little friendly competition, which can only be good for all.

Wow! I like that very much. I can say I am not a huge fan of Damascus steel (it looks great!)

That's beautiful. I think we're going to get along quite well so long as you keep posting pictures like that!

You see Bear's 'One Brick Forge' setup?

I did, and it looks like papa is going to build a small forge in his nest soon. . . just looking out for a piece of railroad tie to make an anvil from! Barring that, any recommendations on an affordable small anvil? I may be frugal, but I am in no way cheap.

Small anvil for forging blades or general forging?
A good 40 or 50lb sledge hammer has a face hard enough for forging... dress the face with a flap disc... keep it cool... then if you want more mass.... weld it to something heavier...
Made one for a friend... I think the sledge brand new at true value was pretty cheap compared to an actual anvil....
I've got 7 anvils of different sizes... started with small ones and then just bit the bullet and got a nice 178lb and then 2 specialized blade anvils....
Let me know if I can help...

    I'd start with blade anvils.

Then a specialized anvil like the sledge face is about the best... or if you have a good metal recycler.... look for a good sized chunk of metal... 4x4 about 3 foot long is good... I'll try to post a pic of mine....

You can take the sledge head and set it in base made of wood ... should do the job very nicely....

Check out your local craigslist... they may have some nice ones.... that someone is just trying to get rid of cheap... although there are alot of folks out there looking for good anvils....

personally... I'd go to the hardware store and buy the biggest sledge hammer they have... bring it home and sand or grind the face smooth and flat.... and use that until I was sure I wanted to get into this....

    Hope that helps....

Here's a link to a bladesmithing anvil by Chuck Robinson... a blacksmith out of Florida...

Sea Robin Forge is his business name... very nice guy... he no longer makes these as he has run out of the stock.... but it will give you some ideas...

Awesome, bear. Cool information, and excellent advice. I'm going to try the sledge face per your recommendation!

Keep the face cool if you grind it.... and remember... any imperfections on the face are going to transfer to your blade...

Let me know if you need help or supplies... hammers, tongs, forge supplies, steel... etc....

    Glad to help...

when you are ready for the big anvil... let me know....

I'll try to post some pics... but switched to Mac and still trying to figure this darn thing out....:0)

Yup... Chuck is one cool dude...
Keep an eye out for a saw maker's anvil.... when you are ready....
They do not have the horn... and are just about perfect for bladesmithing....
I'll try to post some pics of mine... small but perfect for smaller blades...
Fisher made some very nice ones... all the way up to 500lbs...

I have such a piece of railroad track given me by a buddy.. excellent for blacksmithing, especially horseshoes

I'll have to post a few blades/weapons that I have made. I need to get the camcorder out as it's the only way I have to take pics

This is very nice work, Fish. On top of that, I think I can see the face of the virgin Mary, which significantly increases its value I would imagine. ;)

At least...I really hope that's her face...
