I've pretty much read everything on this site about prepping and one item I didn't see mentioned very much is the dutch oven.I bought 2 back in the summer with camping in mind..never dawned on me till a few days ago that they are prep items as well.Shtf situations don't have to affect the whole world,an ice or windstorm can knock out the power for several days or weeks.A dutch oven could make the difference between a hot meal or a baloney sandwich.

In south central N.C.(near Rockingham) we have had gatherings for about 10-12 years in April and Oct. We have Dutch Oven cooking contests and one would be amazed at what comes out of these "cookers". We have cooked everything any connoisseur could want. If in "striking distance" please plan on coming next spring. We eat well, shoot lots, have great survival related classes, and have fun doing it. We have a fish fry on Fri. evening for those coming in late and country ham/grits/hash browns/fresh baked biscuits/etc. in the mornings. We get $20 per adult(kids free) to cover costs and $5 on the cabins or tent free. Hope to see some of you Monkeys there next April--and bring that Dutch Oven. If you do not have one just let me know and will bring an extra for you. PM for details/link to pics-details.

I keep looking for them at yard sales around here, but no one really wants to part with theirs apparently. Side note, I love Cabela's.

As a prep/bug-in item, it is a must! If you plan to bug out...not so good. Heavy as sin and weight to usefulness ratio is low, if you are on foot.

If I bugged out I would hopefully have a place to go that has the dutch oven already there. Depending on the circumstance, I most likely would take at least my cast iron frying pan and lid. I read a christian end time novel years ago and the old lady in the story could take only one thing with her when she was evacuated. She chose her skillet. She said she had the Word of God imprinted on her heart to feed her soul and she needed her skillet to feed the grandkids.

We have a 14", 12", 10" and a 6" that we use a lot, especially the 10 and 12 inchers. We cook a lot of things on them, but taco casserole, chicken pot pie, and corn bread are our specialties. When we get sick of beans and rice a nice taco casserole will definitely lift our spirits.

Be careful when buying Dutch ovens. They aren't all made equal. Some of the Chinese ones are out and out junk. They are light weight and the cast iron is not uniform in thickness so you will have uneven heating. You can never go wrong with Lodge, made right in America.

Well said ...i know from experience what an ice storm can do ...i lived through the ice storm of 98 that happy slapped us here in Quebec not to mention millions others in Ontario and several Northeast States.

Can anyone tell me the best place to find one of these little wonders ? I know nothing of dutch ovens...are any brands considered superior or are they alll pretty much the same ?

I bought the one for my husband at walmart. It's in the cooking pan section near the cast iron skillets.

Bi-Mart here in town(Klamath Falls) has Lodge brand cast iron cookware, including Dutch ovens. If they have them when we go into town, might have to get one.

My cast iron is Wagner's. They have entirely too rough surfaces, I'd recommend Lodge. My father's Lodge stuff went to a sister when he passed. So far as finding a place to buy, go to Amazon.com (among others) and Walmart carries Lodge. I highly recommend one with a bail handle; my Wagner's has one with stops on it so you can pour a bit more easily. Note that not all dutch ovens have a lid that will allow coals to be heaped on top for baking, so if that's on your menu, it will take a bit more looking. The version sold for boy scout camps has the recessed lid for that purpose.

We don't bash turtles, we run over them [rofllmao].

Dunno if you are close to a scout service center, but they might be able to point you in the right direction. Or maybe an outdoor type place that caters to campers.

Wal-mart usually has dutch ovens in sporting goods,in the camping supplies.I think Lodge is the best, they've been around forever. There was a post about boiling and stewing everything..sure,you can boil over candles, kerosene lamps, tin cans with denatured alcohol,5 gallon buckets with gravel and diesel fuel,on and on.Hard to boil bread, though, and I like bread with my meals. This is where dutch ovens shine.
