Oh wow.... where do I start.....

First, I thought this sh*t was dead. I thought it died years ago with the OICW that was a dismal failure.

Second, you will need to half the weight of the current unit.

    Third, bulk. Less of it.

    Sounds good on paper?

Why is it that we sacrifice maneuver for everything? Whether it be protection or an added engagement advantage, maneuver always takes a back seat. Maneuver wins engagements- large or small, Corps or Squad.

Is this going to take away a rifleman? Grenadier? I'm not sure how this would be employed at the squad level. What about collateral damage of an air-burst round? I wouldn't let my troops fire 800M into a village with an air-burst round.... I can see the CNN headlines now.

I really have to agree with al on this.........An air burst round could be devestating to non-combatents. This war in afghanistan, and Iraq though I know it's the right thing to do, has turned into a quagmire stained with the blood of our fighting men and women. The reason I am saying this is you know who the enemy is Al-queda.....But they don't wear a uniform like a marine or a army ranger, no they look like just any other with a damn towl around there heads and shirt and pants. It's a rag-tag guerilla military set up by our own CIA back during the war with Russia.they attack then meld themselves back into society and act like they are innocent........hence you are going to have tons of collateral damage when you damn well know in a given group of people there are al-queda opperatives your trying to get them, so you fire a air-burst above the crowd to get the bad actors and two innocent people die........and it's not even the fact that non-combatants die, It's the fact that our guys did it, that is how the media thinks. This will turn out very bad if these things get used over there.

Also with it,it is a cost prohibitive weapons system. Yes I want the military to have the best, they deserve the very best. But at 35,000.00 apiece it is not a fiscally wise apparatus. They are going to buy 12,000 of these things. We are talking 4.2 billion dollers or right around there to pay for these things.

35,000 a piece makes this a non starter. You'll have one or two guys fielding it in a quasi special role like sniper teams. Called up to take out some ticks and then put away when the smoke clears.

    Hmmmm...
    Maybe it's JUST me....OR:
Anyone else NOTICE anything happening the past few days with regards to MINNESOTA?
    1) The senate bill that is all about "food safety" (FDA) being shoved down our throats, lobbied by none other than MONSANTO!
    2) New "Federal Law" requiring all 50 states to change their road and traffic control signs to include small case letters and make them all 2 inches larger...Brought to you by none other than the 3M company!
    And now this...
Seems "weird" to me that all this money is heading ONLY to Minnesota's companies! Billions of dollars!
But hey, it's just me putting all the pieces together for the bigger picture!

I guess I'm less concerned. At 25 or 30K bux a pop, even the bloated military can't afford a lot of them, and the logistics will be nightmarish. Your average infantryman won't be able to carry enough ammo to sustain action for very long without a pack train. Now, if and when they field those mechanical mules, it might be a different story. Likewise, when the robot infantryman is perfected, then I'll worry.

All the same, if they really are fielding them in the stans as some say, I'll be interested in field feedback.

Too heavy, too expensive - the contract will be cut WAY back, just like every other new weapon system.

What's wrong with the old system - grunts pinned by a tango behind a wall - call in arty or an airstrike - dead tango...... [winkthumb]

Screw the 'collateral damage', this is WAR! maddd

Could you generate a radio signal and jam it?

Simple, because it costs a LOT more to keep Field Artillery within reach of every Operational Unit in the field, OR have Air Support covering every Operational Unit in the field, than to equip a two man Team with this New Weapon System. It is local to the fight, and does NOT rely on Higher Command for support, which takes TIME, and GOOD Comms, both of which are mostly lacking, in these kind of operations. Nope, it uses a Laser Range Finder, the Round is self-contained, and is Fire and Forget. No radio involved. Like I said in an earlier post the only way to defeat this thing is with, maybe Smoke, depending on the Laser used in the Ranging System.

I would mostly agree, but we live in the age of SatCom radios and Excalibur GPS guided 155mm. These are already in play. Every BCT has a FA BN organic. Hell, with a UAV, I don't even have to be on the ground to put a round in to it.

We outnumber them 100 to 1.. someone just shoot the guy with the obvious and fancy gun, first and then when the smoke clears we get it [winkthumb]

Not likely as his range is considerably farther than most can shoot...

Yes, if you are in a desert, etc

In an urban or woodland setting it's all up for grabs. The encounter can occur point blank to a few hundred yards

Looks cool. But I doubt will ever be available for civilian purchase in my lifetime. But a fun toy, none the less.
