Quig, I have seen that one, before, but that kind of weather is what the North Pacific is like, most days in the winter.... If it isn't 20-30 ft waves, your not far enough North.....
Wasn't sure, but highly suspicious. The guys up north learn to surf the swells coming in. That guy was running his engines in reverse.
I commercial fished the winters of 89 and 90 In the Bering sea I was there for the big storm of 89. it is some serious weather.
Well, I've seen 60 foot waves and 100 kt winds off Hatteras, but we submerged right after that ---. Gotta say, once upon a time, long ago and far away, I thought I wanted to fish Alaskan waters for a quick shot at getting rich. Fortunately, something prevented me from going.
Quig, I had a feeling you had been here.... I get way to seasick for that kind of Wx. but I have been servicing that fleet for 35 years... from the DOCK.... there are places NO Man should be and the North Pacific is one of them, when the Barometer goes below 28.00.....
Any Navy blue-water sailor can appreciate this! My second Captain took my little 420 foot Frigate through a Hurricane once, chasing an Ivan (Russian submarine) around a seamount. We too were on our side at one point! NOT a good place to be...... usually things are supposed to start falling off to help right the ship - gun mounts, radar antennas, etc. Ours did not, but the little USS Ainsworth (ASW Frigate FF1090) righted herself anyways! I was mighty glad of that! So were the other 120 or so guys. When I awoke during that event, I was sleeping in the Radar room. I realised I was standing on the bulkhead, with the hatch into the office AT MY FEET! Opening it, I could see the 'Barfometer' was at 90 degrees - on our SIDE! The office was TRASHED! "Ruh-Roh!" The ship slowly came back up...... "Wheeew!" Rough water ain't nothing to sneeze at! <!--IBF.ATTACHMENT_57688--> Also saw the Coastguard Cutter Bear just after she had gone THROUGH a huge wave - those cutters are tough ships! Even so, the front of her superstructure/bridge was set back several inches, the stanchions on the deck were GONE - torn away. Her gun mount lost it's fiberglass dome. She was a submarine for a few seconds!
