Just saw this elsewhere and thought it would make a nice addition to the Monkey Med Forum.... I have NOT run this by Momma, The RN, but it seems like good advise, to "Me"... and it certainly can't hurt.....

This was written by Becky Ransey of Indiana (a doctor's wife), and I want to share it with you. She was over recently for coffee and smelled the bleach I was using to clean my toilet and counter tops. This is what she told me:

"I would like to tell you of the benefits of that plain little ole bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at any drug store. What does bleach cost? My husband has been in the medical field for over 36 years, and most doctors don't tell you about peroxide.

"Have you ever smelled bleach in a doctor's office? ! Why? Because it smells, and it is not healthy! Ask the nurses who work in the doctor's offices, and ask them if they use bleach at home. They are wiser and know better!

"Did you also know bleach was invented in the late 40's? It's Chlorine, folks! And it was used to kill our troops.

"Peroxide was invented during WWI. It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops and hospitals... Please think about this:

1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. (I do it when I bathe.) No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash...

2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs.

3. Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe down your countertops, or spray it on the counters directly..

4 After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to Kill salmonella and other bacteria.

5. I had fungus on my feet for years until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of Peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry..

6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day. My husband has seen gangrene that would not heal with any medicine but was healed by soaking in peroxide.

7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will.

8. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus.. It will bubble and help to kill the bacteria.. Hold for a few minutes, and then blow your nose into a tissue.

9 If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly..

10. Put half a bottle of peroxide into your bathwater to help rid boils, fungus, or other skin infections.

11 You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour it directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water.

Repeat if necessary.

12. I use peroxide to clean my mirrors. There is no smearing, which is why I love it so much for this.

IIRC, peroxide degrades rather quickly once the bottle is opened. I keep a small bottle around for wound cleaning. Once opened, I use it for some of the other things mentioned above and replace it with a sealed bottle.

Long time IF, it is not exposed to AIR, Heat, or sunlight.... that is why it comes in a Dark Bottle....

I'm not sure you should use it regularly as a mouth wash.... it will leave a "furry" coat in the mouth after a while as it kills the beneficial microbes there...(per my dentist) also check to make sure it's 3%higher percentages are for external use only....

Peroxide is a MUST have item! It's functions outweigh the short life once opened. I keep at least 4 small bottles around all the time and 6 of the bigger ones in a dark closet!

Only if you can keep it in a CLOSED Airtight Container, and in a Cool DARK place.... Also be aware that ATF is watching folks who ask for USP grade Hydrogen Peroxide, who do NOT have an Industrial use for it. Ala, Shoe, and Underpants Bomber..... .....

Bleach, or sodium hypochlorite was invented much earlier than that...late 1700s by some Frenchie. But, mustard gas was used by the Germans on British soldiers in WWI. However, chlorine bleach wasn't used in its manufacture.

The stuff we use today--Chlorox, was invented in the early 1900s.

Using bleach as a disinfectant works really well if you know how to use it. Obviously, it can be dangerous if used improperly, but it really kills the nasty bugs that make you sick.

If I recall correctly, peroxide will kill healthy cells just as iodine does, there by inhibiting healing. It reacts to blood and can be used in tracking game, a spray bottle with peroxide can be used to make blood trails show up, it foams when it contacts the blood. If it is used near the eye it can cause a 'clouding' of the uh, iris, the outer part of the eye.
I am sure if I miss-remember all this I will be corrected by someone who really knows what they are speaking of.

[FONT=&quot]Coupla things…. the peroxide we buy off the shelves most likely has stabilizers added that extend shelf life. Not a good idea ingesting peroxide you buy at WallyWorld. I’m pretty sure phosphoric acid and acetanilide are some of the stabilizers used…. they’re cheap but… food safe they are not. Food safe 3% up to 6% should be able to be ordered online and they’re heat tolerant so their shelf life would be theoretically indefinite if not opened. I loooooove peroxide for everything including my plants!!! I used a dilution of a reagent grade I got my hands on when I ran into root systems failing from an “unexpected” 500 year flood. When I ran out…. I started pouring a few WallyWorld bottles around the bases of 5 saplings that had literally been drowning in water and 4 of my saplings lived…. mortality of my neighbors’ saplings from the same bulk order of 25 was 100%.... they forgot to buy peroxide. Coincidence… not exactly. Oxygen…. it can do a body…. and a plant good!!! I’ve read about other uses for peroxide in the garden and definitely plan on givin’ them a whirl. I’m already sold on peroxide being one of the few “goodies” they let us lowly carbon wasters have and here’s a few reasons why you can read for yourself [/FONT][FONT=&quot]Efficacy of Dry Mist of Hydrogen Peroxide (DMHP) against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and use of DMHP for Routine Decontamination of Biosafety Level 3 Laboratories -- Grare et al. 46 (9): 2955 -- Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Efficacy of a fluoridated hydrogen peroxide-based ... I guess I’d say maybe it’s a good idea keeping a decent stock of food grade 4.5 or 6% peroxide on hand and then maybe a decent stock of WallyWorld peroxide but…. be sure to rotate out the non-food safe peroxide after a year or so and definitely pitch what you open that hasn’t been used after a month or so. And…. a higher concentration doesn’t mean it won’t start degrading the minute it’s opened. I think…. not positive… we can stick higher concentrations in the freezer once they’re opened to extend “shelf life”…. check on that…. it’s been a while. I’m sure there’s a procedure out there for testing lower concentrations but…. why bother…. if it doesn’t fizz when we pour some down our kitchen drain…. that’s probably a good indicator our H²O² is now H²O.[/FONT]

Anyone know a retail source of really strong hydrogen peroxide?

I was a hair dresser for many years so I can answer this one for you. The over the counter colorings contain 20 Vol H2O2. Don't buy a box kit just go to your local beauty supply store and pick up a bottle. It's much cheaper. Some sell to the public and some don't so call ahead. Sallys Beauty Supply sells to the public and are coast to coast. The H2O2 starts with 5 Vol, 10, 20, 30, 50, and 60. It's just a few $ for a quart. Good luck!

Been using Hydrogen Peroxide for years and it is great stuff. A few notes:

WARNING: Higher grade Hydrogen Peroxide is very strong and can be like acid. Be very careful with it.

You can purchase the Food Grade that is 30%+ at Health Food stores.

Below is a link to some more info on Hydrogen Peroxide. It lists the uses that businesses use it for and lists the preservatives at the end.
