Buyers Remorse I woke up this morning and thought to myself, are we doing the right thing? We have spent the last 4 years spending all available monies on PM’s , debt reduction, food supplies, security, long term food production and general supplies. This week we invested in a large gen set and transfer switch (over two grand). We also put up 50 gallons of fuel. We have not gone on vacations, out to dinner, or bought any toys. Sometimes I doubt myself and the decisions’ I’ve made. Now and then after a big purchase , this self doubt jumps up and bites me in the arse. (and yes I’m whining) . My question is, do other survivalist, preppers have these thoughts? OK! I’m done , thanks for listening.
Yup, we do. And every now and then, we pull the cork out of the wallet and take a break. 'Bout time you did?
Yep, I, for one, have those thoughts all the time... then I think of how good it feels to have, NO Debt, plenty of stored up grub, and the rest. Then I take Momma out, for a "Big Bucks Blowout" and that then resets the world, on its axis, and gets "Me" back in the correct frame of mind. It is the plague of Mankind to have Doubts, self, and otherwise.... You just have to work through them, with rational thought, and a Good Helpmeet.....
Brother Dunbar, You are fighting the good fight. But Brother BTP and Brother Ghrit are correct in saying what they did say. You do need to step back and say "Fudge-it", for a week or two, go take your wife out for dinner, and a movie. Go to a baseball game, or whatever, the point is brother just get out there and enjoy the fruits of your labor. You are doing a good thing, now just take a Break for a short time period. It will not hurt you, it can only help you.
Yup, same here and did just what the others said to do. Take time for yourself and family. Go to the movies, go camping, do SOMETHING.
I can honestly say that I have never felt any buyer's remorse over my preparations. Every dollar I spend will someday return it's value in spades. I wish I had more to spend.
Those doubts will come back as satisfaction when you're using that which you've stocked up on. Be it a short-term power outage or lengthy lay-off, being prepared is never a bad thing.
Between your PMs and debt reduction, you're wealthier than you were 4 years ago. Go out and celebrate! Buy a toy or two. When I get into one of those state, I find that it eases my conscience somewhat to buy a "dual purpose" toy (gun, ATV, hunting gear) Ya know - stuff that you don't have to try so hard to justify. Yes, it's rationalizing - so what?
Been there... done that.... still have the occasional twinge... we try to set aside a certian amount of money per month for "Us" we do dinners, buy books, movies, etc... we also have a vacation that allows us to recoup... the vacation may be to visit friends/family in other areas of the U.S. and practice a relocation plan at the same time....
Yes, it is good to still live life and take a break from the prepping. You can't think about this 24/7. I totally get the buyers remorse thing. When I am feeling that I just look at my kids and I remember why I do it all.
Yes, sometimes it is very healthy to take a break and try to enjoy life a bit. Besides, what are we fighting for/prepping for in the first place? It is very difficult to justify some preps, but in the long run, as was already stated, you can use those goods and items any time you want or need to, which makes them a sound investment. Prepping is a lifestyle choice and it centers on the core philosophy of being self-reliant. But, sometimes it feels good to let loose and just relax a bit.
I had been through that. Personally I realized we can't invest all of our time and money into preperation. We must invest into that, no question, but not everything. Getting out of debt and finances in order definately, in fact that's my job is to help people do that and I am not a hypocrite (for the most part). Enjoying the modern luxuries seems even more luxurious knowing there is a decent chance we won't be able to someday. So we increase our supplies a little bit every month. And we take vacations. As my wife put it once, if SHTF how will we ever see Hawaii? It's been a dream of hers for a very long time and we will be going in 2 years. So even if it costs us money that could be going elsewhere, we will forever have those memories.
I think everybody questions their purchases from time to time. However as I write this I have a feeling of satisfaction. I am watching the news as I write this and see civil unrest all over the Middle East and today it has spread into Europe. I see gas and diesel up another 12 cents this week, and I see food prices exploding. We all have doubts but let me tell you....as survivalists and preppers we are doing the right thing....no doubt. Just look at what is going on around you.
I have hit that point and then the world steps up and shows me it more screwed up than I thought. I too take a break and take the wife out or do something I like, but I know that the basic needs are met to allow me to get by. Owning property and having no debt are sound ideas and worth the effort even if you think the world is perfect.
Prepping for what might happen is important. Taking time to enjoy now is equally important. Don't completely sacrifice now for an uncertain future...but don't ignore that future either. It's a balancing act.
yes,i do every time i spend money on supplys i think should have spent that on the kids now we have one weekend every month doing what they want,take a brake my frend. laurence
