Doomsday bunker sales surge in wake of Japan earthquake - Mar. 23, 2011 These people want to throw money at a problem and make it go away. $45k for a spot in a bomb shelter that you have no input into designing. It would go a long way towards purchasing your own retreat somewhere and stocking it. This Yadan guy is a frightened sheep, not a prepper. I would not be surprised if he gets fleeced in this deal. How exactly does this admittedly frightened guy get from LA to Nebraska in an emergency? There's no thought being put into this at all. How long does he have to get there before they turn away stragglers? What kind of assurances does he get that when he arrives, there is a stockpile of supplies (being locked in an old missile silo with no food ain't much better than being outside...) For that matter, if you're that concerned, why would you stay in Los Angeles at all? Take the money and put it into moving away from the threat center.
All are valid points of concern. Like you said-take that money, buy some remote land, and put your own shelter in it. Traveling a long distance in an emergency will take you forever. My son had to stay on base(sent his wife/children early) at Hunter(Charleston, SC) till the hurricane forced a shut down. It took him nearly 14 hours to make a 4 hour trip. The interstates were just big parking lots. Couple of times he just pulled over and slept a bit. I asked him why he did not take the back roads. Point is--have alternate routes planned out to your destination. Using less traveled lesser known roads may avoid check points if martial law is imposed. Danger is running into a "Lights Out" type situation.
As always, there are folks who will take advantage of the fears of others to make a quick financial profit. I agree that taking the money and investing it in things like food preps, water, guns, knives, hand tools, etc. would be much wiser. In a true shtf scenario I would not want to even think of going from LA to Nebraska to finally arrive at a "possible" bug out site....not a plan.
