Ok... I've been on the Monkey for a very short time, but this "preparedness" thing is starting to sink in. I am a terrible procrastinator and I'm partially lazy (ok.. maybe more than partial if you ask my wife!), but slowly I am getting with the program. I know... your asking why I am rambling on in "gear review" like this. Well part of my baby steps was to sample some Mountain House freeze dried food today. I tried the scrambled eggs and bacon, and it was actually pretty good! It did have some kind of aftertaste, but it was pretty darn tasty! Now I'll start checking in to purchasing a little more in quantity so I'll have a few for my Bug Out/Get Home Bags. RJ
Glad to hear it!! Hint on any MH scrambled eggs product: Use extra water for the boil, let it sit at least 10 minutes (12 is better) and then strain off any extra water before eating. Extra water in your eggs is a little gross.
Yep, the bacon and peppers addd in is much better than the plain eggs! I like the MH meal packets over all. Their Beef Stroganoff is one of my favorite flavors, but my local Wally's no longer carries it. They only have three flavors. Our Sportsman's Warehouse carried a much larger selection, but they folded last year. The "Freeze Dried Icecream" though - that one is WEIRD! Actually tastes okay, but the 'feel' and texture are all off.
The Stroganoff is really good! I ordered a case today as part of my prep. I was not a fan of the chili mac.
That "Two servings" is about right for ONE hungry camper! The Teriyaki Chicken is fairly decent, as is the Beef Stew. Chili Mac ain't bad. Have not tried the Spaghetti.
Some people hate certain flavors. Allways try before you buy. REI has almost all of the MH pouches, Bass pro has most. I like: Lasangia ChiliMac Beef Strog Oriental Spicy Chicken Kids like the Mac and Cheese Pasta Primeveria Breakfast Scramble Anything with chicken is OK to Good I dislike: Wild rice Pilaf Spagetti (but kids love it) S&S Pork
What section at Walmart? I'd love to look here. What little experience I have the freeze dried (mountain house) is way better than the dehydrated stuff, IMHO.
It's in the camping section, probably in the very corner if the layouts are the same. I don't like buying from WM, but when it comes to MH foods, it's often cheaper than buying anywhere else. Plus, WM is almost assured a constant delivery when we can't find these items online. Too bad they don't stock the #10 cans. There is another company, comparable in price to MH I have been buying but I haven't had the chance to sample: AlpineAire is the name. I bought a bunch of their freeze dried meals from Amazon. The bonus (supposedly) to these meals is, they are all natural with no GMO foods.
Hi how does the MH compare to the MRE? Ive only ever used MRE's and Im happy with them, just interested to hear the difference.
MRE’s get old real quick unless you get real constructive with them. That little bottle of Tabasco Sauce comes in real handy sometimes. I have had the old C-rats during the mid-70’s when I was overseas in South East Asia. Some of those canned meats; the dogs would turn up their noses and not eat. Locals would scarf them up and trade you their local dishes for some of them. I never had to worry about my next meal as long as I had several boxes of them.
Well, the obvious difference is the fact that the MRE's are ready to eat (hence the name), and MH meals are freeze dried. This means they are lighter and more can be carried in a backpack. Freeze dried foods will also keep longer. In my opinion, they taste far better, and they have better ingredients -some, like AlpineAire freeze dired foods, are all natural. You can also get double servings with MH meals, which is a real plus for us hungrier types. Each has their own advantages.
Neither is something you want to eat long-term. MRE is too dense, and needs a lot of water to prevent walking like The Duke. MH is full of preservatives, MSG and other chemical goodness. Both will keep you going on your BO or camping trip. I would not put them into Junior's school lunch daily.
