NatGeo: Doomsday Preppers 2011

I watched 20 mins of it and nearly had to turn it off.. anyone else watch it?

I don't know where they found these people; while they were well prepared, the constant "End of the world" garbage was annoying as hell. It actually made me irritated.

I don't know about any one else here and I'm sure it was hashed out .. but for crying out loud.. End of the world, mad max scenarios would make those people target #1.

I just don't see us going down those roads, even with economic disaster or as in the show... a coronal mass ejection wiping out the grid.

The second family was more my speed.. prepping for economic disaster.

I don't know.. maybe I'm ranting.. maybe natgeo edited the show to make them seem more "crazy" than they were. Either way, I'm getting tired of the "End of the world" rap that we're getting hit with.

I keep on telling people. I'm not prepping for the TEOTW.. that it seems wildly inaccurate to say that. I tell them it's insurance against disasters that would have larger effects on a greater portions of society than some localized event.

blah blah.. i'm blabbering now.. going to bed.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.....sure the Doomsday narrative, by the Doomsday voice over narrator is bloody annoying and inane, and the couple in the clip that I looked at....probably wouldn't survive a major localised disaster....none the less some of the self sufficiency food production systems they developed were worth looking at.

The two film clips on the Nat Geo site feature a couple who have created a self sufficient hydroponic / aquaponic garden, and a couple of dudes (David and Scott) who have featured food storage, energy systems, and water supply strategies in their preps. There are useful ideas to be gleaned from both clips if you just ignore the doom and gloom voice over guy.

It's psychological conditioning, not to mention a fallacious argument to propose that all preppers are focused on the end of the world (guilt by association). The more the Zionist establishment can paint an ill picture on being prepared, the better it is for them; where we were once a proud and capable nation, are now little more than indifferent slaves with less than a precarious chance of surviving martial law. If the media draws a picture of "doomsday survivalists" and makes it appear as though these people are crazy, then the rest of the "sane" crowd will doublethink their way around the attraction to prep in the future.

It appears to be a two-pronged assault; on one end, the media shuts down the prep idea, and on the other, they make us out to be crazies by tying us all together with the fanatics.

And it's all in the subconscious.

Agreed about the "good ideas".. I did take away some good info.. I just had a hard time with the level of crazy they slathered on top of it all.

During the first group (family in AZ with the pool): they mentioned it briefly and came up with a lame excuse to "include and inform the neighbors," but if TSHTF, the neighbors would panic after a month and take everything that family had. They are in a bad situation in that they can produce enough to sustain them, but not the whole neighborhood and they live in a densely populated area.

Remember the Twilight Zone episode with the fallout shelter?

The guy also mention that there would be massive reactor meltdowns in 2012 when solar flares zapped the grid. If true...well, I guess his chickens, tilapia, and bok choy are radiation resistant.

I couldn't watch the rest....although I thought the drills were a good idea and was envious that his wife was with the program.

After all of his prepping; the guy dies from Talapia overdose and protein shakes made from green yuk.

Having had all of his inventory shown - and his name broadcast - on National TV; the wife and kids flee for their lives, after being surrounded by greedy, hungry NatGeo watchers who googled the name and immediately obtained their address.

According to the narrative voice; there was a 65% chance that would happen.

I watched it last night and I like UG would cuss through most of it for the same reason.
They did have a couple of families that looked fairly good for what they had.
The one thing that got me was that most of them were right in the center of towns cities or large communities, not what I would do.
I think the media wants to paint all of us as these people when what we want is to be prepared for is food shortages and the like because we all know that with the way things are going that is more likely than a solar event or a total collapse of the world .

Isn't it funny how media always paint us with a broad brush as being the same as the crazies? An they always say we preparing for the end of the world yet don't complete the phrase that TEOTWAWKI stands for. The End Of The World As We Know It!!! That can mean a social or economical collapse or massive terroristic attacks. They make it sound like we prepping for sumthing out of the movies like "I Am Legend" or "Book of Elijah". But hell, why report the truth with average people when you can get ratings with lies, distortions & nutcases.

Well, that won't be me. I'm not a survivalist.. I'm a prepper. I'm stuck in the sub-urbs and I don't run out into the wilderness weeks at a time with nothing but shoe laces and gum.. ;) .. lol.

We already do that! We are known as the "prepping community", and all you have to do is search for a term with "prep" or "prepper" in it to find some of our channels. We hold weekly video chats on Blog.tv and routinely send each other gifts and share information through our videos. A lot of preppers on YouTube even hold raffles and contests and give out lots of prep prizes.

We are a fun group of people, really. I send some of them this way once in a while.
