If nothing else, he got us closer (I think) to a consensus : A Maverick 88 (~$210) A handgun tbd (let's say ~$500) And possibly a Ruger 10/22 (~$210) The remainder being used towards ammunition and magazines. Yes?
Another good point is the Maerick shotgun can use mossberg 500 barrels. If you decide to add a slug barrel later Mossbergs are easy to find and inexpensive.
I feel better That is what I would do, given the budget. That enables you to do nearly everything you may need to do with a firearm. And, yes. I would put the rest toward ammo and mags. Look at a decent holster as well. There are fairly inexpensive leather holsters out there that are of decent quality. Don Hume comes to mind. There are several others that I can't think of at the moment. The order should be- guns, ammo, mags, holster, then anything else. If need be, a handgun can be tucked anywhere. Not ideal, but better than having no ammo and a holster JMHO
If i came into a windfall of nearly a couple grand and had no weapons I like your order of things. I might however add something into the mix. your bug out vehicle. I'd get the 12 ga shotty (88,500 or 870) repair any deficiencies in the BOV store 10-20 gallons of stabilized fuel that will be used rotationally then get the handgun and 22LR Long gun. Just a thought.
Watch the Maverick it s based on the old 500 with a single slide bar these seem to have a problem with breaking at the slide bar attachment point to the fore end. The 500a has double slide bars like the 870. The other thing I would throw out here is what you buy now is the basics. In the end you will want a combat caliber hand gun and and rifle for you and the wife. Dont underestimate .22 for defense or back up defense, this will not be war it will be survival and the people coming at you will go after softer game until they have no alternative. My original post is to get you at a point that you can do something, like other preps you go from there. As to pistols glocks are great I carry one. The nine is fine and they available used fairly cheap.
I'm a big fan of the XD, saw a really nice 9mm XD with a stainless slide, 4-inch for $400 at Cheaper-Than-Dirt a couple of weeks ago.

So, a buddy of mine let me shoot his M&P 9mm fullsize, and I have to say, I liked this gun a lot (even shot it pretty well too!). So much so that he let me buy it off of him for $400 including the transfer fee. I take my first NRA class tomorrow.
Well now you are back to original 1200.00 You have a 9mm pistol right? You wife is proficient with a .22? Next stop should be a ruger 10-22 with at least four 30 round Eagle or butler creek mags. This will set you back 200 for the rifle and another 50/60 for mags then buy 1400 CCI Mini mags and both of you get some range time and get zeroed in with both guns. I would then set my sights on an AR-15 platform because your wife will be able to soot that as well. I paid 750.00 for my Stag arms fully loaded with Magpul furniture. I added 239 for burris 3x optic and wala Im rockin. 1600.00 can get you set up real nice. lots of ways but I would skip the AK as accuracy can be an issue. No one here will argue THE FACT that the AR IS MORE ACCURATE. I keep 1000 rounds in an air tight ammo can for my little 10-22. It is the backup defense rifle for our property defense. The 3 B's For me it always falls back to the 3 B's. Beans (Food Storage) Bullets (Ammo for all occasions) Bullion (PM's, gold, junk silver etc) And I look at those in that priority, cause I can't eat gold, I need ammo to protect the beans etc. Dutch
