I picked up one of these last week or close to it... Savage 93r17 with a Osprey 3X9X40 Scope...I think it will taste ''Good''...
I ask this in the nicest possible way and because I have no idea...but what exactly is the point of the .17hmr? Very long range pest control? Target shooting?
I understand that its a flat shooting round,Good for coyotes,and anything smaller...go for a head shot...Seems to be a more devastating round compared to the 22 mag. Also i picked this up from a older gentleman whose health is going downhill and he's selling off some guns to pay for medical bills...Picked up a Winchester Model 290 as well... I've yet to shoot either one...But will soon...
In "Varmint Al's" words...... "RED MIST!" Tiny ilght-weight bullet with polymer tip at crazy-fast velocity equals a blown-up small critter! His testing in the early days included a video of a rat on a fence post - BANG! and the rat..... uh..... a couple chunks of rat.... went flying up! NOT for meat hunting if you want to eat it! I have the Marlin 17V - basically the 25MN rechambered/bored. I can use the same magazines as my 25MN rifle, and have the identical scope - minimises the learning curve. Laser-accurate! I have shot several honest 3/8" groups at 100 yards. Splatted a fly on the target paper with a called shot - I love this caliber! It's a little spendy, but the performance is amazing! There are more options in loads now, including an FMJ - but that gets away from what it was intended for. I have few Savage rifles, but they are certainly the equal of the Marlins. Should do you proud!
Purpose? For the dispatching of critters that get into my soybean field with the express purpose of eating them. Long range or short range, the ballistic tips do a fair job relatively inexpesively........Ross
Not good for Brer Bear either. He takes offense to having divots blown out of his hide...... I have seen online test results of the .17HMR shot into water-filled milk jugs. NO penetration out the backside - the bullet fragments, and all fragments retained original bullet weight. 100% energy transfer to target.....
