Does the Monkey need a separate area for Communications? Sub forum under Survival or keep these topics in Technical? We seem to have some technical expertise in the area of comms and I'd like to capture this info in a way that's easy to locate. Whatchathink?
I would be a contributor to that type of Forum, should it magically appear. ..... Especially if you could move all those old threads into it, when it was born.
I don't know jack about any of this, so take it for what it's worth: I am interested in learning as much about this as I can and it would make it more convenient to have everything in one place. To me, it makes more sense to have it in 'technical,' but you may want to break that forum out into 'Comms,' 'computer/forum issues'...and that leaves open any miscellaneous issues (e.g., GPS) that would be a catch-all that might need to be somewhere else/separate sub-forum. I look forward to your solution!
Interested myself. From basic CB stuff to pre cellphone company radio networks, maybe even to resistors and diodes. For Dummies. Like me.
I have an Amateur Extra Class ticket; I build computers, overclock them, snip diodes , etc and I'd contribute also.
I would like to see two sections: Getting Started in Comms and Advanced Comms I see this as a way for people to ease into discussions on CBs, HAM, etc., not to put pressure on those interested in assisting with leading, but I would love to see the Getting Started be much like a "tutorial" that will guide people new and then as they gain knowledge, they can transition to advanced comms. Kind of like this thread, but for radio waves: http://www.survivalmonkey.com/forum/back-basics/1502-home-butchering-picture-tutorial-steer.html
I like that approach to the issue, as well, Clyde. There is a lot of technical theory, that a basic USER, just doesn't need to get into, but as they start to use the technology, will invariably need to be understood. We do have some very qualified folks, here on the Monkey, and MANY Users that could become qualified, should they want to invest a bit of Learning Curve energy. Comms of all kinds, is by nature a very technical subject and RF Comms, is even more so, and a bit more esoteric in nature. Basic Rules mostly apply to 80%, of the Comms issues, and understanding the last 20% is an ART, as much as a Science. 90% of the Users will never need the last 20% of that technology understanding, and those that find the interest, will dig in and gain that understanding by OJT, or Book Learning, if they can just be pointed in the right direction. I, for one, am here, to help those who want to know, how the technology can be used, and how it works, for those who want to understand it, more than just as a user. ..... YMMV....
For the first time in my life, I like Clyde's idea So, should those two comms forums be created under Technical or put up in Survival? Makes no difference to me but you may want them organized a certain way that makes sense. Of course, we'll move all applicable threads.
Basics would fit well under general survival, I think. Advanced might be better in technical. +1 for Clyde.
The way I'm looking at the Forum Index, this forum 'Technical' is in a category called 'Off Topic', which alludes to the fact that it was created for computerish issues and not survival ones. I think that another subforum(s) under Survival would be a better spot.
