Unbridled fear of a .50 Barrett...

It has been confirmed by 4 separate sources up north, near my place, that someone that is considered to be a "bit off", in more ways than one, has acquired a Barrett. It has shown up ( heard being fired) and people went to see what on earth was making the noise......
It's a semi auto version. It has been seen and heard firing, twice now, 5 rounds each time, in different places.
I got some weird phone calls!
I was asked what they should do. ( Like I'm the Shell answer man!??)
I have no idea...The owner of this 'monster' came by it legally, as far as anyone knows, having sold a parcel of land he owned up in Colorado.
But, many up there are very very worried about this development.
In the hands of a well experienced person, it would be considered ( IMHO) a bonus in the area. You'd like to have this guy on "your side", if and when things go really bad....
But that is NOT the case. He was 'tossed out' by one of the largest Militia groups in Arizona, and is "considered" to be a real 'threat' to most that know him....
I have never met, much less seen the man personally.
A weapon of that magnitude would definitely make certain people a bit uneasy, especially in the hands of a person that they were already leery of!
The range and power of that weapon is beyond what most people up there are familiar with, and I can understand their worries!
It should be "interesting", as this NEW saga plays out!

It might be a good idea to meet and try to get a feel for what's in the heart and mind of this individual pre SHTF. Then if seriously considered to be a wolf ......

Immediately post SHTF I think if it were me, a preemptive strike might be in order for two reasons. Eliminate the threat #1, secure the .50 Barret all ammo and accesories and stash it for future use as conditions dictate #2.
    .
It would definately be a hard call to make, but look at the repercusion possibilities if this were not done. How many good people would die before this rogue potential wolf could be neutralized. There is a learning curve to consider. The longer this individual has and uses this weapon, the harder it may be to neutralize the threat.
    .
Once he has put the weapon to use for neferious reasons, a tribal effort must be initiated to remove this threat. No hard call there what so ever! jmho

Dragonfly......not to sound offensive, but are you a magnet for this type of ****? You need a new neighborhood me thinks. Your surrounded by loonies and nut jobs.

Just because the guy owns it, doesn't mean he will be able to shoot it accurately or continue to be able to feed it based upon finances.

What difference does it make if this guy has a 50 BMG or a scoped .308?
You and your neighbors are following the same logic that anti-gunners use.

If someone wants to shoot you bad enough, they will be able to do it with any caliber - A Barrett is not any scarier than a bow and arrow to me. A hole through a vital is a hole through a vital.

Do you have reason to believe that the man has no legal basis for owning such a fine weapon? 'militia type' doesn't scare me any more than 'biker type' since I've been both.

Exactly. It depends on the shooter. It is no more deadly or dangerous than any other caliber. The only concern I would have is if he was being responsible when shooting it. Does he have an adequate backstop, does he shoot in the direction of houses, roads etc. the same concerns as any one shooting but the range is much more than a .308 or .223.

Was firing a 91 Nagant last yr and my neighbor asked me what kind of cannon I was firing. Wonder what he will say when I do? Would be good to go visit your "neighbor". Take him a few rounds that you just happen to have laying around. Abe Lincoln said the best way to stop an enemy is to make a friend out of him. That or a 168 gn BTHP, 06

I would rather be shot by a Barrett than a bow. Nothing worse than watching your blood pressure spray out odd your chest until you pass out versus being cut in half with immediate shock and death.

The guy is obviously not to bright by letting everyone know that he has one or is letting everyone know that he has one as a warning, still not smart. Tac has it right, go meet the guy and see what's up!

If his hacienda can be approached to within 600 yards without being spotted - he's toast...... A hit with a .308 trumps an unfired .50BMG every time...... [sniper66]

couldn't a agree more, if someone goes off the deep end and wants to harm others they will, either with a 50 cal or a rock if that's all they have one is just easier to stop than the other

I don't think there is any more need to fear a .50 Barret

than any other weapon. Certainly its characteristics and capabilities should be respected, and ought be factored into any operational planning, but to be intimidated by it, is to give it more power than its usefulness perhaps deserves.

The main limitation of the Barret is the operator's competency at using the weapon effectively; which includes skills of marksmanship, siting, use of deception, camouflage and concealment; decision making on target choice and timing of engagement. The weapon's greatest effectiveness is achieved during the surprise of the initial engagement. Once you know what you are dealing with, and you have a general idea where the fire is coming from, you can then start putting in place counter measures, and then the advantage starts tipping away from the Barret.

It should also be noted that the Barret is essentially a team weapon, so expect for there to be at least one observer, and maybe one or two others providing close security / protection.

Good field craft and battlecraft will help you to defeat the Barret....lying impotently paralysed with fear in the target zone will not.
