Hey all! I'm a newbie to the forums and prepping (mostly). I have acquired quite a few food-grade containers and lids from a Wal-Mart deli/bakery (mostly icing/glaze containers). I was attempting to store some wheat in them, but was unable to get the last "flap" on the lid to seal. I wailed on it with a rubber mallet, too. I was afraid I was going to damage the container, but it still wouldn't close all of the way. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there something simple I'm overlooking or are they designed to only be closed symmetrically (by a press)? I would appreciate any help. There is an almost unlimited supply available (a few at a time) and it would be nice to be able to use them for long term storage. Thanks.
If you put your Grains, in a Mylar Bag, with a Thermal Seal, on the top, then the Bucket Lid seal isn't a real problem. Many Prep'ers do this, and then get the containers to seal as well, for double security. don't forget to flood with dry Nitrogen, CO2, or add Oxygen Absorbers.... ..... YMMV...
WTH? Absolutely BS ...... you need a food grade bucket with a gasketed lid FIRMLY SEALED !!! ...... the bucket is the "heavy lifter" when it comes to storage longevity ..... it's a packaging system ....... if you don't seal your 02/mylar bagged food correctly in the bucket ..... you might as well leave them in the original plastic bags and toss them in a Tuperware container .....
Usually they close very easily. I would recommend you peel the lid back off, make sure nothing has parked itself on the rim of the bucket (holding the lid up), rotate the lid a bit, and try to close it up again. Hope that works for ya..
I did that already. I also tried several lids. I wouldn't have bothered anyone here if I hadn't tried a few things first. Maybe I should give it another shot. I've never had this kind of problem with 5-gallon buckets. Maybe it's just an idiot-synchracy of these small ones.
I've never had a problem, unless there was some sort of debris lodged on the gasket. That being said, I've stopped "re-using" lids and started switching to gamma seal lids. Check the lid itself for damage to the "tabs" that hold it on the bucket. Take some pics and post them, someone might be able to see something that can help out.
I bought some new 1 gallon buckets with lids, the only was that I could close them was to stand on them,standing with 2 feet on opposite sides and then repeating it by standing on the other two sides,these buckets were designed to open after you pulled off the sealing/locking ring.
