With dowloadable pdf files on USMC tactical doctrine. Much of it is at a higher level than would be relevant to survival retreat defence....but there's quite a bit of useful stuff that can be gleaned and adapted for the thinking prepper. USMC Manuals « U.S. Marines – United States Marine Corps the manual on scouting and patrolling is probably very useful http://www.theusmarines.com/downloads/FMFM6_7/MAIN-1.pdf
A useful USMC site? Chelloveck, I'm glad to see that you didn't highlight the word "useful" in surprise. If a career in the Marines taught me anything, it's that I wouldn't want the Marines coming after me. Along with the tactical doctrine, anyone interested in survival could learn a lot from the Marine Corps mindset. It's an attitude. If you run out of ammo, you pick up your e-tool. When you break that off in someone's head, you start picking up rocks. When you run out of rocks, you start choking them to death. Never give up. Never say die. There's a reason the Germans of WWI dubbed them hounds from hell, or "Devil Dogs." It's all about attitude.
Thanks Chell, lost my WWII Marine manual. Like everything else the new manuals do not get into "bloody" details like the old ones. Still have my "little red handbook" issued at PI and lots of others accumulated through the years.
No need for surprise or mocking quotation marks I tend to think that Hollywood does the marines quite a bit of disservice in its portrayal of marines. I wouldn't have recommended the site if I felt that the tactical doctrine placed in it was flaky. Although some of the material deals with doctrine at platoon / company level...much of it is dealt with at battalion and brigade level or higher. Even so...many of the principles that underpin the higher formation level doctrine can be applied at the micro level of the survival group / retreat. I am eclectic with my interest in tactical doctrine, and have accumulated references to American, Soviet, Wehrmacht, British, Japanese, Chinese and Rhodesian tactical doctrines. My philosophy is simple...use what has been proven to work. The trick is to decide what is appropriate to the circumstances, and the tactical environment at the time.
They first made a "The Warrior Song" and it was good, But when I Heard the Marine "Hard Corps" version, I've since felt compelled to share with anyone I suspect might be the least bit Marine Appreciative
Havining more than one way to skin a cat I am in full agreement with this statement. Use what works. Adapt and Over Come. However to do so, one must have a working knowledge of OTHER ways of handling a "situational moment". Gafarmboy If you can not protect what you own, you won't own in long.
