The time it takes to learn what each abbreviation means would be better spent typing out the actual word.
Have to learn it if you expect to be able to understand text messages sent to you by your grandchildren - keep it handy since your life may be graced by grands one day, if not already

Why should you adapt to their comms? Convince them to communicate properly, eh? Worked on my grizmoids, "Speak English so I can figure out what you're saying!!" (When they tell you what they are croaking out, you get the translation for free.) Translation, I don't do text. Can't see a reason for it.
I've learned to use the slang in text since my hands are so big and thy keypad is sooooo small - abbreviation has become my friend
BZ (Bravo Zulu) Gator 45/70. Excellent reference. This new texting slang reminds me of my first and last tour with the Second Marine Air Wing. They had so many goofy acronyms that I finally developed a Glossary of Acronyms & Terms (GOAT) and filled it with Easily Recognizeable Military Acronyms (ERMA's). Best acronym for an additional duty assignment had to be the FAGO. (Fun and Games Officer) Worst was always the CACO (Casualty Assistance Calls Officer). Now that's all ancient history, and I'm happily retired. I think back on those days and I'm ROTFL-AICGU (Rolling On The Floor Laughing - And I Can't Get Up) Sorry, that's oldster texting slang. If I could find a way to combine this youthful texting slang and the mush mouth dialect that southern barbers use when speaking to each other we'd probably have an unbreakable code that rivals the Code Talkers of WWII. Every profession has those..... Momma talks about the Nursing ones all the time.... there are two that stand out..... TOBAS Take out Back, and Shoot TSTL To Stupid, to Live ...... YMMV.....
