with all of the new android/Iphones currently available obtions on prepping your phone need to be addresssed.... some apps i reccommend are the following...

    1. up grade your SDV chip to 8 gigabytes
    2. down load either the Nook or kindle your choice
now log on to the internet and down load selected books from the SMF reading room, emphasis on survival books, first aid, woodcrafts,etc...
    3. down load the knots guide
    4.US army survival guide
    5. E beuvalliers disaster survival guide
    6. a maps app
    7. GPS (turned off until you need it)
    8. Smart Compass
    9.foraging flash cards
    10. first aid by symptom

this should cover most of the basic needs any other suggestions?

Yep, but the eggs are still all in one basket. I have a problem with no backup gear or plans, and no faith in solar or car if things really go out of round. In truth, I'm not at all enthusiastic about all this electronic gadgetry. See my avatar.

The point is most folks carry a smart phone today... it costs no more weight to load your phone like this... you phone battery generally lasts longer than your computer... short of a EMP burst or bad luck the phone is available for you to use... might as well spend a few minutes and prep it... who knows it might come in handy....

and you forgot to add on there some kind of false beacon to lead the gps trackers astray when they start tracing your smartphone

Pretty hard to track a SmartPhone when it is in Airplane Mode. (all RF Output is turned OFF, and unpowered)...... ..... YMMV....

First thing to go in a martial law situation is the internet and then phone service. Good idea to have info stored but would never depend on it as a communication device. Even if it still works it would likely be monitored heavily. Preplanning will probably be of more value than public conversations.

I think that my point is being missed... a prepped phone is not just for a SHTF situation... but for everyday carry... It's not designed to be the "be all or End all of preps... it's to supliment your normal edc/bob (not the boy friend model)... if i go driving/4 wheeling in the mountains and breakdown these are some items that would be worth having in your phone...

I expect things to go back to the 1800's.... no phone no lights no motor cars. Expect to walk out of the house with nothing but the close on your back. Now what are you going to do? How will you get food and water? Remember you have nothing...not even a pocket knife.

Your point is well taken. Regardless, backup power (along with a bit of survival gear) could serve well, most especially in 4WD scenarios. Out on the superslab, well, maybe not so much.

I agree with what Witch Doctor 01's saying. I don't own a smartphone, and don't plan on getting one anytime soon. If I did have one, I would set it up like he suggests. It wouldn't cost you any more than the chip and you have a library at your disposal. An extra, sealed battery wouldn't be a bad idea either, just adding redundancies with your car/solar/hand crank charger.

My wife wants to get a smartphone, but she drops cellphones too much.

I have an older smartphone, and I have it loaded up similar to that. It's out of warranty, out of contract, so it costs me nothing to keep around. I take it out every other week to make sure it fires up and charge the battery. It is usually about 50% when I check it, need to get on fleaBay or CL and get a couple more batteries. Also have a 12V car charger, a solar battery, and a USB-mini cable.

I keep it all in a broken microwave oven in the garage. It burned out long ago, and I keep it as an EMP-resistant safe. It should act as a Faraday cage, protecting what's inside...if you have a broken microwave, this is a way to "recycle/repurpose" it. It's in the garage on a shelf, stuff crammed around it, so it's a decent throwdown "safe"- hidden in plain sight! Nobody would take it, it's old and nasty-looking, doubtful it would merit even a second glance...

I also plan to load up a netbook with as much information as I can, a sort of "digital library", so that I will have a point of reference when TSHTF. Medical reference, general how-to's, planting guides, maps, knots, etc. and put it in there as well. It'll fit nicely, I get about 7 hours runtime out of my 9-cell battery with everything on, with radios off, it should last 10.

You should consider a smart phone as another tool in your arsenal of preps.
A$30 used smart phone off of Ebay, that takes micro sdhc cards, and will read pdf files, would be an invaluable tool after the balloon goes up.
It will give you access to knowledge that you might not have in your head.
A hell of lot of info can be stored in pdf format on a handfull of 16gb micro sdhc cards.Info that can be had for free to download off the interwebs.
Info that could help for shtf,or every day living.Info that can be stored in usable a form in a small camera bag.
That being said there is no prep that you shouldnt be able to survive without should you loose it.
You should be prepared to survive without any prep's if need be.You never know what or when something will go down, and leave you with no preps at all.Matt

I did most of this when I first got my (not so) smart phone.. Not a bad idea at all... It's always helpful to have as much information as possible at your disposal, whether it be for first-aid, poisonous plant info, how to make an emergency batch of C4. You know, whatever may come up.. lol.. But at the first sign of any type of martial law or any TEOTWAWKI situation - the battery gets popped out.. - Try tracking that big bro...

Also you might consider getting an otter box or ballistics case for it.

Some food for thought!SDHC,and MicroSDHC cards stored seperate from the device are both hardend against X-ray radiation. That also means they are highly resistant to EMP without extra shielding.
"Most"devise's not hooked to either an external power source,or wire more than 4'long will not be effected by EMP unless the source of the emmision is close by.
Then you wont care anymore, becouse you'll no longer exist, except on the subatomic level.
