Steve Jobs, co founder and the real brains behind apple has just died. If you have stock, in the morning you may want to consider unloading it quick like. Bill Gates is but the salesman and organizer of the co, not the developer

Sad day indeed. Gates is a master marketer and deal maker but Steve Jobs was the visionary of the contemporary world of electronics world

Steve will be sorely missed. He was a creative genius, and was the heart and soul of Apple. As witnessed by the underwhelming iPhone 4.5 rollout yesterday, his absence is already being felt, as Apple is revealing themselves to have a "services and software" mentality emerging, with less design influence. They will likely turn into the next HP, if this is any indication...

Does anyone else feel like he hung on just long enough to see the rollout, read the reviews, and said "That's it. iQuit."?

Hundreds of developers who were used up like wet rags and abused by this man and his slave driving of his development staff would disagree with this statement.

Sad to see someone die like that.. but Karma's is a real mother ****er.

I worked in the S/W development field for many years and, particularly during the 1980's, never knew a company that did not work the programmers and developers to wet rags. People like Steve Jobs expect not only excellence but the same maniacal commitment to the goal.

Just remember that NONE of those folks were there under duress..... They ALL chose to be at Apple, and got paid WELL, for their talent. They could quit, any time they chose. Some did, and many didn't, until they were wealthy enough to retire..... ..... YMMV.....

    The next Apple innovation: iDead.

In all seriousness, Mr. Jobs was a visionary and a genius. The world has been lessened by his passing. I hope he rests in eternal peace.

Well, I can tell you're not a software dev. I am and I'm telling you, it's not like that in the big silicon. You walk out of a big player and you're out.. "Used to be a dev at Apple" doesn't ring. Choice or not.. that final decision wasn't made until he drove them into the ground. Just sayin'..

[edit] Lets not forget that Woz was the brains behind the biz. Jobs was just a brilliant marketer.

No offense, but a software company like Apple were far and few between. Most people didn't know wtf software was and most shops were in house on mainframes until Apple and MS.

I walked out of my last job for similar reasons.. didn't have much of a choice but to stay with them as long as I could. Jobs were slim to none or they wanted a gazillion different skill sets that would require 2 people on any normal day.

Since I personally know the IBM developer who designed, built the prototype and programmed their first PC coming off mainframe, I am intimately aware of the environment of the early years. They were all cowboys 7 days a week who ate, slept, and breathed their passion to create the PC. Unfortunately, Tom Watson took the easy way out in his effort to protect the M/F - he failed to have the same vision of Jobs, my friend Beaver, and men like them. Watson was too busy trying to protect IBM from another anti-trust suit that he let the wolf in the door by licensing DOS from Gates.

Jobs was a man of a true vision and passion for the PC environment - there were others of course but none who brought their vision to reality in the same way with the same long term success

But at what cost.. you just won't address this issue. Every one praises this guy like then next coming.. I just don't see it. What I see is someone who had innovative ideas and used up people to make them happen. I just don't think that's right.

Okay, people work hard, harder than they ever dreamed they would have to - guess what, that's the real world. I came into the shop at 4:30 a.m. yesterday and didn't leave until 1 a.m this morning, not the first time and won't be the last - tough, this is the real world and it sometimes requires more than seems reasonable. If I didn't love what I do and believe in it, I wouldn't be here and they had that same option. Sorry but I have no sympathy for the whiners of the world when it comes to working hard

If you want to work 8 hrs a day, get 10 mins break every 4 hrs and an hr for lunch, leave at the end of your shift and forget the work until you punch in the next morning, go work at Wal-Mart for $8 an hr. However, if you want to be part of building something, anything, it is more than a job, more than a paycheck - it's a way of life and it's what separates them from the rest.
