Why is the Government still stockpiling survival foods?

I received this from a newsletter I get, I was wanting to get my fellow monkeys takes on this:

 

I read this elsewhere too. My first reaction is, "duh". We stockpile MREs for wartime. FEMA stockpiles similar ready-meals for disasters. That's just good old fashioned preparedness at the gov't level. I wouldn't read into it too much. Not to mention the conflicting interests with certain people selling this food and leaking such stories.... good marketing.

 

Having food and delivering food are distinctly different subjects as Katrina taught FEMA.

 

i say find out where it is stored ,for later use!

I think they are exspecting the same as us and preparing to dig in for when SHTF and wait til it's over and the zombie's are dead. Kind of the same plan as I have.

 

Just groceries we have already paid for.

 

It is called a "buffer stock scheme" basically the government buys when there's a bumper crop and sells when harvests are smaller.

While it may be true that FEMA buys during a bumper crop and sells when not so much is available, I believe that with what's going on around the globe, they won't be selling any in the near future. And I also believe they aren't storing it for the "general" population either.

 

Seems like I remember reading on the Mountain House site that it wasn't true that their supply was down because of government buy outs, just that a LOT of people started buying more emergency food. Although the above article could be referring to something else.

Even if /gov was I would hope it's for emergency preparations, what worries me more is just the fact that the government thinks there is big enough worry to put the time and money into it.

 

I'm surprised as diverse geographically speaking as this group is that no one has spoken up to "testify" first hand that this is just exactly the kind of foodstuff FEMA delivers during disasters.

Because that is true.

I can speak to purchase volume, or "intent" factually so I'll keep my yap shut about that.

 

It could be they are doing this so the sheeple will be like I told you Big Brother is working and will take care of us. That way they wont fight as much on their way to slaughter. lol

 

Woops. My mistake. I didn't realize they were not talking about MREs and MRE like meals.

 

Guys, you missed the line:

This article I was sent is not about availability of MREs. It is about the shortfall of dehydrated foodstuffs, and why. Point in fact, MRE's - real ones in the appropriately poo brown poly bags - are not available to the general public. What is sold to the general public, in the case of MRE's are Mil-Spec knock offs.

In every instance where the government was handing out food after a disaster like Katrina, it was pouches of MREs. Not unprepared or prepared dehydrated foods.

After Hurricane Andrew, all you could get from the Military (Government) food depots were MREs and bottled water. Places like the Salvation Army food drops handed out canned goods, bottles of water, bread etc. What I am thinking is perhaps bases and other more permanent installations are getting stocks of these foods to accommodate large numbers of people, eating from a chow hall or mess hall. The question for me is why?

So, Opinionated, it is not true that the Dot Gov serves this kind of food in a disaster situation. They hand out MREs to the general public, and in Miami it was directly from cases and from the back of a deuce and a half.

 

I've admitted my confusion.

As an FYI, 48 hours after Andrew hit Homestead/Florida City, both myself and my (then) wife were there. We spent two and a half weeks living out of a tent doing what we could to help folks that got wiped out.

We were given food from many different sources, and of many different types.

We wound up leaving because the soldiers sent to provide security were not given any ammunition - NONE - yet both they and the very few LEO's seemed to have a real problem with me being armed. In spite of the fact I was licensed by the state (to open carry) and it was glaringly obvious I was there working as a volunteer to help people, not rob them.

Even my liberal leaning wife got really mad about that.

Yes, after Andrew, the walking patrols were more for show than anything. Hell, my friends and I stopped several groups of looters in our neighborhood, and we were better armed than the Military patrols because we had ammunition. I was mentioning particularly the foodstuffs handed out in my area, which was south Cutler Ridge...less than a mile from Homestead. Other areas may have had more food distribution, but I never saw them. We had limited fuel, and what preps we had we were hording as much as possible. I can say this, my good friend from North Miami/South Broward brought us the BEST stuff to help us out: toilet paper and water. He had evacuated to Orlando area, and picked up a ton of TP and water.

We made sure we sat outside the house, on the porch, mind, after dark, fully armed. The scum rose to the top very quickly, and one group of 5 guys even approached our house claiming to be the owners. Little did they know, until we (all four of us) stood up and brought weapons to bear then I announced loudly that I owned the house. When they saw we were packing 2 AKs, a shotgun, and an AR-10, as well as hip holstered pistols, those bozos beat feet rather quickly, yelling "Hey man, don't shoot!".

It was because of the events after Andrew that I realized, in my youthful naivete, I was woefully under prepared for the storm and the aftermath. That event caused me to go into full prepper overdrive, and I have never suffered from any reasonable lack in any situation since. Sad thing was I got tagged by Andrew YET again, when I traveled to Alabama to stay with some family. The storm came raging northward with minimally abated fury, and I got caught in my CAR on a highway in the worst part of it to hit central Alabama. How was I to know? No working radio in the car, no radio period. I vowed then, never again would I get caught like that, and I have not wavered from that vow since.

 

That's crazy how people will act in a disaster, scum bags. Imagine what it would be like if there were a mass collapse or disaster that hit most of the country.

 

i with you on that this april my home town got slamed with an F4 took out half of the south part of town and what was the big problem "Looters" i was a volunteer and had to have a pass from the sheriffs department to go in there and help just seems crazy that they would rather harm than help id say shoot the bastards that touch my crap
