Iran formally complains to US over plot charges

WASHINGTON (AP) — Iran has formally complained to the U.S. over claims the Iranian government was involved in an alleged plot to kill Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States, a U.S. official said Sunday.
The official said the U.S. received a diplomatic note on Friday expressing displeasure with the charges that were leveled earlier this month. Iran has already denied the allegations. The official said the note was delivered through the Swiss embassy in Tehran, which represents U.S. interests in Iran since the two countries don't have diplomatic relations.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a private diplomatic exchange.
Earlier this month, U.S. officials claimed agents linked to Iran's Quds Force — an elite wing of the powerful Revolutionary Guard — were involved in the suspected plot to kill the Saudi ambassador to the U.S., Adel Al-Jubeir.
An Iranian diplomatic source, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said the letter emphasized Iranian assertions that Washington's allegations are "based on lies" and called into question U.S. diplomatic tactics that Iran calls violations of "international rules and regulations."
The Iranian source did not make the precise wording of the letter available, but said the letter also mentioned the thousands of deaths in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 and the "billions of dollars from the U.S. citizens' pockets." Plans by President Barack Obama to withdraw all U.S. forces from Iraq by the end of the year have drawn criticism from political opponents because of Iran's close ties with Iraq's Shiite majority and the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
The letter called for a U.S. apology for the ambassador plot allegations and sought unspecified compensation for "material and moral damages of this baseless accusation," the source added.
A dual U.S.-Iranian citizen who holds an Iranian passport, Manssor Arbabsiar, 56, pleaded not guilty last week in U.S. District Court in New York in connection with the plot allegations.
According to the U.S. complaint, Arbabsiar has admitted his role in a $1.5 million plot to kill the ambassador at a Washington restaurant by setting off explosives.
But many experts in Iranian affairs have questioned why Iran's Quds Force, which typically works through third parties such as Lebanon's Hezbollah, would reach out to Arbabsiar, a former used car salesman in Texas who is accused of seeking Mexican drug cartel hitmen to carry out the slaying.
No trial date has been set for Arbabsiar. U.S. District Judge John F. Keenan scheduled his next court appearance for Dec. 21.

and if obuttface lets them get away with this he can too...

I have yet to hear an expert, from any nation, express "belief" that this incident is consistent with Iranian operations ~ever~.

I'm far more inclined to believe that the whole thing - start to finish - is designed for one purpose:

"To divert America's attention from Eric Holder and his handlers."

Think about it. If "America" pressed the Gunrunner issue it could bring Obammy and his whole crony farm crashing down and find more than a couple of them ultimately imprisoned. Imagine, the first halfrican president, his semi-african appointee both in Levenworth. How could the history books and leftist mass media possibly spin that adequately?

They couldn't. At least not while the people that know the truth are still alive.

Well, I'm far from an "expert" on anything, but according to the Human Rights Center, between 1979 and 2008, the senior leadership of Iran's ruling Islamic party has been linked to at least 162 killings of regime opponents in 19 countries

While Iran has denied any involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people, one of the men wanted in the attack is now the country's Defense Minister.

As recently as August of this year, an Iraqi cleric has claimed Iranian involvement in an assassination attempt against him, after he resisted Iranian influence in Iraq.

Seems like there are certainly enough allegations to cause one to wonder if Iran does not employ assassination as a foreign, as well as domestic, policy tool.

I'm not saying that our government is beyond fanning the flames a little, but there seems to be more than enough smoke present to validate the suspicion of a fire.

I have to agree. Even though our government is probably less trustworthy now than it ever has been (on both sides of the isle), Iran is not really known for playing above board. Sometimes there really are bad guys and sometimes a horse is really a horse. Lets quit looking for the zebra on this one.

Any word on whether they used anything like an unemployed used car salesman and a Mexican drug cartel member to do that stuff? I dunno. [dunno]

But that seems to be what "the experts" say is so completely out of context for being an Iranian operation. Like I say, I dunno. But the mere timing of it is enough to make me seriously suspect the zebra is up to no good. THAT seems completely consistent.

I understand what you are saying about the timing. One point from a layman's view. Using the drug cartel could have been a a smart thing. If the job had not been burned they make a good fall guy. As for the used car salesman, he was family. Not the first or last person to trust family first. My first question was how the DEA felt about their plant being outed. Today there was a bust of 70 drug runners. Maybe they had to go with what info they had gathered already.

Well once the us leaves Iraq, Iran will basically take over the middle east, most of the couctries are in some sort of cival war and are easy to take over.

With the worlds economy in a mess, soon to be a major oil energy crisis, we might need preps soon, wish I had a whole lot more.
