PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) - Portland police warned on Friday that anti-Wall Street protesters in the city were fashioning makeshift weapons with wood and nails, in advance of a planned move by authorities to clear their two encampments over the weekend.
The statement from Portland police came a day after Portland Mayor Sam Adams, citing sanitation and safety concerns, gave demonstrators until 12:01 a.m. on Sunday to clear out their tents.
Demonstrators said this week they number between 500 and 800, and police confirmed the group numbers in the hundreds.
Police said the Occupy Portland demonstration, which has seen protesters camp out in two downtown parks, has been peaceful since it began over one month ago.
"We are committed to it remaining peaceful but very concerned about information that people are massing for and preparing for a confrontation," police said in a statement.
Details on possible plans for violence within the camps come from people inside the encampments who are concerned, Portland police Sergeant Pete Simpson said.
There are reports weapons are being made with wood and nails, that a hole is being dug in one of the parks and that pallets are being turned into shields, said police.
There are also concerns that demonstrators could climb trees during an eviction. "Removing people from trees presents unique challenges," Simpson said.
In reaction to the police warning, activists involved with Occupy Portland put out their own statement denying any plans for violence.
"The Portland Police have been engaging for the last several weeks in a campaign to defame and confuse the message of our movement by attributing the actions and statements of individuals to the movement as a whole, and they continue to do so," the activists' statement said.
Occupy Portland activist Adriane, who declined to give her last name, also disputed the information from police.
"I don't know anyone that is going to engage in violent behavior," she said.
But protesters are preparing for the possibility of being tear gassed by police and obtaining gas masks, she said.
Aside from the two downtown parks, the protest has also spilled over to a plaza owned by the federal government, and that camp will be included in the law enforcement action to clear out the encampments, Mayor Adams said this week.
Occupy Portland has emerged as one of several West Coast hubs of a nationwide campaign launched in September against what demonstrators describe as economic inequality, corporate excesses, high unemployment and bailouts of major banks.
The plan by Portland officials to close down the city's two protest camps is the latest by a major U.S. city aimed at closing similar sites that have sprung up across the country.
Clashes with police already have erupted in some other cities that have tried to remove camps of anti-Wall Street demonstrators, notably in Oakland, California, across the bay from San Francisco.
Occupy Portland activists are planning a "family-friendly" potluck dinner and march on Saturday at 5 p.m.

How to get them out of a tree? Doesn't sound that terribly difficult.
I've got a technique i use on squirrels all the time.
    Hasn't failed me yet. [stirpot]

Seriously though, sounds like the Portland police are using some inside agitators to create a situation that if it comes to blows and they use the Oakland technique they can cover their asses. And that's my opinion.

I'm doubtful the Portland PD would have any need to utilize agitators. Isn't Portland rather notorious for widespread anti-police sentiment and anarchist activity in general? I know there is a very large neo-nazi presence there but I was also thinking that there is an even larger leftist extremist presence. I could be thinking of a different city, but if this is the case with Portland, I would think that these types of people would be more than happy to use this as an opportunity to fight with the police.

Very bad move on the OWS clowns' part - fighting the Po-po, whether started by ringers or not, is a sure way to the jail or the morgue.
Why not declare a 'moral victory', unarse the AO and go home tired but proud? Instead they'll get their butts waxed and handed to them....... [monkeyeating]
Right ot wrong, the OWS loses.

The Anarchist crowd in Oregon, is centered down in Eugene, and has been for many years. These are the same folks that went up to Seattle for the WTC Riots, and started the BS up there, and then once going, scampered back to Oregon, and watched it all come down on CNN. Professional Agent Provocateurs. they show up at just about any "Demonstration" on the West Coast, happy to provide a little excitement, for the Masses.

I'm just a lady from Ohio, but I would be tempted to turn on the fire hoses and clean up the parks. That would give the ACLU something to keep busy with!

I just hate to see it going down this road because this is going to get people hurt and maybe killed. It will be a no win for neither side

I'm torn...I don't like unnecessary violence(as in for any reason that is not related to simple survival), but at the same time, these....well pick a word...could do with a few 'hard' lessons about reality if you ask me.

Im still waiting for one of these idiots to take a page from the European protestors and throw a fire bomb. On the news the cops in Europe just put it out, here the guy with the match will get shot if the cop doesn't shoot the bottle and make it a self solving problem.

It's just a matterr of time until they try and step it up like in other countries. Thats when the police are going to end up having to kill one of them and the riot's will spread across the US. What they need to do and I hate to say it because I think everyone has the right to free speech and protest (Lawfully) But If I was incharge of this I would have the guy's suit up and go in and remove them now. Not giving them time to plan and dig in have city crews go in after secured and hall the stuff left behind to the landfil and lock the area down with a cerfew 8pm and enforce it. To keep them from setting back up.

It seems as if it is just a matter of time before something happens which will trigger violence. All it takes is one nut case.

And sadly it seems there's no shortage of nut cases. My view on the 1st Amendment is yes, you do have the right to say whatever you want. But just because you have the right to be an idiot doesn't mean you HAVE to exercise it. There's a little thing called R-E-S-P-O-N-S-I-B-I-L-I-T-Y. These goobers should try it sometime. Half, if not most of the stuff I do isn't because I want to do it, it's simply because if I don't do it, it doesn't get done and the consequences aren't pretty. "Want to" is a luxury. A friend's kid would keep saying "I want this, I want that" and I would always say to her, which her parents started saying as well: "Yeah, how's it feel to want?"

He may not kill them, but they'd sure be scared half to death seeing the trees part! ( sorry I'm thinking raccoons!) Oh well, either way it would be a HOOT!

You know I have been thinking and I have the perfect way to clear these people out. Send someone in to hand out job application's and see how quick these guy's get out of Dodge. It would be like bluegrass music to Yankee's or Heavy Metal to Hippie's

Agreed and as our Founders settled matters by dueling there is no doubt they attached a high responsibility to one's words and actions.
