Thinking of getting a hi point carbine, anyone have any hands experience on with one? Also any thoughts on caliber, 9mm,40s&w,45acp?

I've never owned a Hi Point, but I know people that have them and like them.

If it were me I would look at the Kel-Tec sub 2000. The price is close, and you might be able to match the mag to your handgun. I like mine.

I love my 9mm Hi-Point Carbine. Accurate and reliable, shoots all brands and types of 9mm I've found so far, so is not ammo-picky.
Far better ergonomics than the Sub2000, though if you particularly NEED a more compact and hideable weapon, the Sub2000 would be better. The Hi-Point has good adjustable sights, and the stock fits us longer-armed shooters far better.
A buddy has the .40SW Hi-Point Carbine and likes it. I have hopes of eventually getting the .45ACP model. I just wish it took 1911 mags.

Ive own the 9mm and the 45ACP they both are fun to shoot never had any problems. The only two things that bothered me was limited mag capasity, and they can be a pain to clean until you get use to doing it. I enjyed shooting mine and plan on purchasing two of the 9mm again fot my daughter's SHTF weapons and home defense.

I suggest you try both the Hi-Point and Sub2000 before deciding.

The Hi Point is severely limited in capacity by comparison, and many people prefer the ergonomics of the Subbie to the Hi Point...it is which one feels comfortable to you. Some people do prefer it with the 1" stock extension.

I shot the Hi Point first and liked it a lot, just not the 10 round mags...but I planned to get one anyway. Then I tried a friend's Subbie and loved it...I now have 2 in Glock 9mm. One lives in a laptop case in my truck with a stack of 33 rd mags. My wife stole the other and it lives by her side of the bed.

IMO, the single advantage for the Hi Point is the front sight...but many either replace the KelTec sight with a Hi Point (or AR15) sight, or, as I did, make a "blade" for the front sight from aluminum painted orange.

    As is frequently said here...YMMV

Motomo I don't know what you firearm collection is, or if you live rural or urban. And I never want to talk someone out of getting another gun. After all they are like jello, there is always room for more!

Also I admit that pistol caliber carbines are fun to shoot. But think about this.

Lay a Marlin Camp or a Hi point next to a AR carbine (M4 style) or a AK, or even a 30-30 carbine. The size and weight difference is negligible. Not enough to justify accepting the weaker pistol round. Yes the longer barrel will give you some extra range and power, but not enough to equal a intermediate rifle round.

I've had a Marlin camp since the mid 90's. It's a really fun gun. My wife loves it and claimed it as hers after I let her shoot it. But since We move to the country it hasn't left the gun safe. Why because when we are checking fence lines we want a real rifle.

The one exception is the Kel-Tec. Folded it's a 16"x6" package. As stated previously it will fit in a lap top bag, with other stuff, to make it "urban bail out bag" that would go unnoticed by most people.

Any way just my thought on the issue.

Thanks to all for the advice, I'll be sure to check out the sub 2000 before making a final decision

Also i agree with wolfgang2000 you might want to look at some compct rifles for a bugout / defense gun I have an Stag AR-15 reason is it can multi function self defense, longer shot range, larger capasity, the weapon could also be use to hunt for food plus Military and LEO all use the 556 round.

Main reason was leaning toward hi point was cost (both weapon and ammo), though could pick up used AK or AR for a little more money. But also thought pistol caliber would keep it under the Brady bill radar.Untill I get some target practice, the wildlife has nothing to fear from me.

Oh ok sounds like a good plan to me as long as you get what you want and are happy with it, it would never be a wrong choice. Reason being if you like it you will shoot it more, a gun is no good hanging on a wall being cleaned once a year and shot once every two years. You will enjoy the Hi-Point and will have fun on the line with it. good luck and let me know what you think after you get it and burn a few rounds.

Motomo, believe me I know about money problems. My wife and I went on a fixed income in 2001. Inflation has eaten most of discretionary income.

If all you can afford is the Hi Point get it. However I still feel that the Kel-Tec and the Hi Point are really close in price. So make yourself happy.

Bottom line almost any gun is better than NO gun.

Know what I like most about the Hi-point ?
    Welcome to Hi-Point Firearms!

Of course statements like that suck for working gunsmiths like me... Winkz...

As for caliber... that is a matter of personal choice... I went with the .40 165 gr Remington Golden Sabers... because of it's high one shot stop potential... in essence I have fewer rounds in my mag but each shot has a greater %percent of one round stopping an opponent dead in his tracks...

Also I never have found a shortage of .40's on store shelves... even walmart sells big 100 round boxes of hardball target ammo... but what it comes down to is what you like and what your comfortable with... if you like double taps with the 9mm great, who am I to argue

    It's a funny thing.....
Before the failed 2008 election run-up, I'd findgobs of that danged .40SW brass at the range - it got to outnumbering the 9mm at times! Shooters were buying the stuff like crazy.
Then while the Immaculate Selection was playing out, ALL ammo became darned near extinct - except the .40SW! The shelves had plenty!

I have NO guns in that caliber......

But I HAD stocked up on components for my calibers.

Had no trouble keeping my 9mm Hi-Point fed. The only problem I find with the Hi-Point is the trigger - the curve is totally wrong for my trigger finger! Shooting awile gets sore.

The Sub2000 has an okay trigger - I just can't deal with it's ultra-short length of pull and horrid sights. My buddy has both guns - he prefers the H-P for general shooting, but keeps the Sub2000 in case he needs a compact "MC Gun", as it folds. He did make the mistake of getting the Glock-magazine model, while his pistols are Berettas...... DOH!
The Sub2000 gets points for having Hi-cap capability, which the Hi-Point sadly lacks.
