Unfortunately, we do not get to spend as much time as we'd like to with our family and friends over there. The lifestyle in this area is like stepping back in time. Hunting and fishing is not what it used to be, no thanks to the Environmentalist and the big business of hunting leases.

Where am I for those that care to take a guess?

Quig no helping, I'm pretty sure you have been in this area.

Sorry for the bad lighting it was overcast and I'm not the best photographer.

Ill look up Pauline in a few seconds. My guess, total guess as I am a flatlander from Florida, and seldom roam far, would be somewhere in S. Dakota. Is very pretty country, but would be too damn cold for me in winter.

Doh, I just noticed the central Oregon line .........

Good guess considering you're on the other side of the country. Heck, people that live here do not realize where this is much less been there.

The area pictured is north of Paulina and the other side of the Ochoco National Forest, 9 miles north of Mitchell. The Painted Hills is one of 3 units of the John Day Fossil Beds. The river we camped alongside and floated was the John Day River. All of the above pictures are from this area.

Here's a little info on the area, if interested.

I was at the Painted Hills for the first time about 40 years ago; my uncle had family friends just outside of Mitchell. Drove by a couple more times over the years since, but not as far in as your pictures -- great shots!

We'd also have family reunions at the Old Ochoco Hwy maintenance camp, at least until they started charging exhorbitant fees. I'd love to drive back there again.

Thanks for the memories (no Frank Sinatra accent :^)

The John Day Fossil Beds area is a really nice place to visit! I highly recommend it to anyone who gets a chance to go to the area.

Those rock drawings are old Indian drawings - there are Indian caves in the area, too.
