Totally Collapse might not be a bag thing

Our would not be the first civilization to implode, fall apart, brought to the breaking point... The Greeks, Romans, Chinese... the list is endless... and each time it happened we humans came bouncing back bigger better and stronger for the experience...my grandpa lived through the great depression... lots of Japanese lived through the bombing of Hiroshimathen three days later Nagasaki... look at them Jap's now... each time its happened the recovery has been swifter and surer...

So things might be a bit hard for a while... so what... would it really be so bad having to rebuild a civil society now that we know what mistakes "not" to make, again...

I for one look forward to what could be... maybe I'll finally get my flying car out of the deal?

 

I feel that a partial collapse will be worse that a total collapse. If there is no government I will raid hard at the beginning taking what is needed to enhance survival. This will allow us to bring people into the community and support them while establishing a "Village" government until something bigger can be reestablished. It also means not having to worry about being tried for killing those that would take what is yours.

Some government means worrying about the government taking form you and calling you criminal for doing what they do. Plus their trying to force the prepared to support those who are not.

 

After a total collapse, what would really hinder you from achieving your personal goals and dreams. It would be really nice to be able to do to my property what I wish without some .govt bureaucrat telling me what I can and cannot do to my "OWN" property with out obtaining some form of "permit". Yes, as Grandpa Dave has stated above, it will be hard at first to rebuild, but look at this way, nobody but yourself will enjoy the fruits of your own labor, and God help those that try to take what you have worked hard to rebuild.

 

The Roman Empire fell roughly around AD900, perhaps earlier. The Dark Ages lasted from then til roughly the 15th century.
Germany and Japan had a major SHTF experience at the end of WWII. They were rebuilt by America.

WHO will rebuild us when we fall into the Dark? Will it take centuries to drag ourselves back up from the Dark?

I would prefer to avoid that, IF we can. But as a man once said..... "Life will find a way!" Too bad I won't get to see what civilization comes after ours.

 

Way I see it, we don't really own our homes & vehicles. we RENT them from the Government. Paying a rent they call a "Property Tax" on them every year!!! Few more years & my truck's tax value will be low enough that my "rent" will be under $5 & I think I heard when its under $5 owed they let ya have it Rent Free at last!!!

And then telling their friends that "All preppers are..." pointing to this thread.

A collapse of society (seen too often in the 19th ans 20th Centuries) is a horrible thing - how could anyone even speak of such a thing as positive?

I'm not suggesting censorship - say what you will - it's still enough of a free country, for now.

I am saying many others read this board - lurkers and such, and may come away with a skewed vision of what 'we' are. Moderation, in other words.

We can destroy the entire earth many times over.

Chemicals that never should have existed
Biological Agents that nature couldn't imagine
and Nuclear weapons.

Erm, to me a total collapse would mean, no body is minding the condition of these manmade bringers of death. Ultimately, containment of these agents will fail due to corrosion, loss of power, or just plain neglect.

Hopefully we can actually come up with a plan to destroy these agents before any collapse.

Yes I know I'm dreaming, but ya gotta have a dream. Better than the nightmare that we will have brought upon ourselves by tweaking the atom and playing with the strands of DNA without having a way to undo or dispose of the experimentation resultants.

Interesting thread - it's really trying to put words to an unspeakable event. Where powers and pricipalities fail, it leaves a vacuum that is filled immediately by something else - good or bad. How many morally-minded people do you see ready to fill in that void? How many gov't sucking leeches do you see ready to jump in and make their riches? [I see a lot of entitled people wanting to make sure we feed them.] Probably depends on where you live...

It's a difficult thought no matter which way you look at it.

 

Who will determine what was a mistake and what wasn't? There are those who feel it was a mistake to ever allow women to learn to read, or who believe that religion should be mandatory.

A collapsed society is ripe for the rise of extremist factions as people look to a leader who gives them a scapegoat for the situation. Women, blacks, Catholics, atheists, rich people, poor people, scientists, gays, won't matter who as long as there IS a who to point the finger at.

Maybe I just have a really dim view of humanity, but working at City Hall does that to you after a few years.

 

I think I see where you are coming from. As much as I would not like it to happen (collapse of society), I have found myself wishing it would happen during my lifetime. Why should the mess that is before us be handed down to my children and/or grandchildren? It would take me a lifetime to hand down all of the skills I have learned to pass onto my children. Heck, I'm still learning new things/skills in life, part of the reason I'm here.

I am of the opinion that society would have a much better chance of some sort of civility and order, rather than in a few generations from now. As time passes on, the basis of what this country used to stand for will be lost. Take a look around it is already happening and has been before I was born. I am 47 yrs. old.

 

Bingo - seeing "people" for who we are. Notice I said "we", as in the whole lot of us.

I don't envy you having to see what you probably have to put up with every day.

 

I don't want to see a total collapse. If that happens, the folks in the cities are, with a few exceptions, going to be toast. That group will include my two younger brothers, my sister, and my father, as well as nearly all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins. It may very well be inevitable, but I'm not in any hurry to see it.

 

I would guess us MONKEYS long for a simpler life, and Im 99% that is the intent of this thred. So its still not yet a crime to live a simple life, just do it.
I dont want a collepse of any kind, I do look foward to Jeasus cominig back, but thats still a way off.

A PAW is nothing to look forward to

Sadly, I am in agreement with DW. A total collapse of civilisation would probably be an awful thing for humanity, but it may just be the saving of life on earth. We as a species have no special entitlement to survival, no more than any other species on this planet. That we have out competed, and have been responsible for the extinction of many other species, is a testament to our special evolutionary advantages; but our hubristic self destruction would be particularly ironic if it was the result of the misuse of those very same special advantages.

If we are lucky, such a collapse may see a reversion to the life of 18th century technology. There would most likely be a vast dying off of humanity, even if there wasn't a global pandemic responsible for human mortality and and morbidity. Just the breakdown of global trade and transport systems would see the spectre of famine and starvation cruelly culling much of humanity.

Reason and rationality is barely holding the line against un-reason and irrationality as it is, and a reversion to a new dark age will see a resurgance of the kind of ignorance and barbarism that typifies the kind of superstitious persecutions typically prosecuted by the fanatically religiose.

No...a PAW is something to prepare for, but not something to be welcomed...in our lifetime, or in anyone else's lifetime.

 

I can not speak for anybody else here. When I said I wish it would happen in my lifetime was only in the context that if it is going to happen, I'd rather it happen during my lifetime then for my children to have to deal with it. It that makes any sense. I am by means looking forward to it, nor do I want it to come to fruition.

There is no doubt in my mind that it be the most horrific event in our lifetime, not something to look forward to at all.

I understood what you meant by what you said. I kind of feel the same way as you do, in the sense that I am making provisions for me and mine, and that it if it happens on my watch, then they might have some chance of survival with my guidance and help. I am endeavouring to make provision for contingencies beyond my watch, and just hope that they may make a difference. I didn't think that you were looking forward to Götterdämmerung (aka Ragnarok) ( Götterdämmerung - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary ) just for the sake of assuming a heroic role in it.

 

IMHO I think many of us have that little flicker of "bring it on" in our heads from time to time. Doing what we do is preparing for such an event so it is only rational to play out scenerios in your head and how you should prepare for or deal with them. Asking what others envision it would be like will give you things to ponder you have not come up with. It's always prudent to plan for worst case scenerios.
The human side of us sees what our minds have come up with and then it is tough to think of such things playing out because we all have friends and family that will not survive such an event. My brother and sister in law live in D.C. with their two kids. My sister lives in Atlanta. A total collapse will more than likely kill them. Close friends of ours dont prep and rely on supermarkets and utilities for every aspect of life (water, fuel, sanitation). they think my wife and I are crazy because of our filled pantry. They suggest buying a few days worth of food at the supermarket and eat fresh every day. They will die if the end as we know it happens.
Do I think that something big NEEDS to happen to help reset people's perspective on whats important in life and what is real in life? Well......I certainly do. Do I wish for it and hope for it, no, hard lessons are learned the hard way.

 

I think what alot of people around the country dont see is the loss that will come with such event. Loss of lives, loss of property, loss of our country. Look at when the USSR fell small wars across the country, every now new country fighting for control over weapons, land and people. Still when you look at the country years later it is still war torn, the people still suffer, starve, have no rights and still being abused on a larger scale by the different goverments. With that being said I think that it is and has been happening and we are past the point of no return. I also agree with Colt I just hope it happen in my time so my kids dont have to deal with it with out me there to help them through it. Then I guess the scary thing for me is after it happen. What then? will the Blue Helments sweep in along with the goverment that failed us to take control. I think it has a very good possibility to be alot worse for us than it does for getting better.
