Here in the U.S., we champion your right to choose...as long as that choice is to kill your unborn baby, but not to smoke, eat french fries, or take the supplements you want. [freedom]

McCain bill threatens access to vitamins and supplements

In 100 years...we will have so many laws that breathing will be regulated...everyone will be a potential criminal just due to the sheer number of laws dictating "normal" behaviors. These jokers must think that writing more laws is equated to working.

Govt. needs to get out of people's lives...which, from the looks of things from the FL primary, is not going to happen.

I think that you are right....

I think that you are right....people should have the freedom of choice to spend good money on the snake oil of their choice, notwithstanding that the constituent ingredients may not be manufactured to any particular standard of quality, that the active constituents may be adulterated with hazardous ingredients, and that the claims made by the supplement's manufacturers and distributors may not accord with its actual efficacy, beyond the placebo effect.

I understand where you are coming from, from a civil libertarian perspective, and I am sure that big pharmacy is almost certainly a supporter of this legislation, but there also needs to be checks and balances against egregious exploitation of lack of regulatory scrutiny. It's a hard call that will please no one satisfactorily.

I don't think that either result will see a diminishment of government's intrusion into citizen's lives...both candidates will keep taking government down that interverventionist path, regardless of the rhetoric that they and their supporters are mouthing. Newt will enact legilslation objectionable to civil libertarians, not all that differently than Romney, when either gets into power...if...they get into power. The only difference is which cartels will benefit, from their patron being the winner among the competitors. The underwriters of the loser's campaign will undoubtedly not lose any time sending their lobbyist cohorts to the Whitehouse to suck up to the incumbent, whichever candidate / party wins. That's the American way!

That IS their one and only 'metric' by which they can dupe the mugs into thinking the politician is "Doing something about XXXXXX problem!"

All true and I agree with you. Obviously, you don't want to buy a VITAMIN and it shut your kidneys down. So, I think that it's a given that when we talk about "supplements," that they should be safe and not harm anyone.

On the other hand, you see these info-mercials that blame your obesity on stress and "the body's own hormones." Add to that junk like "5-hour Energy," energy drinks, etc. that if abused, will hurt your body.

Common sense has to come into play at some point. If you hear a snake-oil salesman tell you that you can drop 100 # if you just take this little pill....caveat emptor. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. Losing weight is by and large, a simple equation of calorie-in - calorie-out. If this is positive or 0, you 'aint gonna lose weight (in general).

I heard a story about a gamer staying up 36 hours and just drinking RedBulls or the like....dead. The caffeine-laced drink was certainly a contributing factor, but stupidity is the primary cause.

I can mix up some salt water, drink it, and kill myself. Is that the salt mfr's fault?

I think if I were a politician, I would make sure that fish antibiotics were safe for human consumption. Fish are sensitive. [whistle2]

No but if he tells you it will cure cancer, boils, acne, gout, and buiod muscle and it causes harm it is...

unfortunately many peopole want a quick fix for all of their ills... look at weight loss pills, compounds, lotions, etc... our current society is built on instant gratification... i want it and i want it now... why work hard exercise and eat right when i can take a pill and fix it...

we take anti-biotics at the drop of a hat... will take pills with massive side effects in cluding possible death to clear up a skin disorder and make us pretty...

This being said i'm not in favor of this particular law... the FDC can't regulate drugs why sould they be able to fix supplements and vitamins?

We would do better to regulate the ability of drug and suppleent manufactureres to advertise on TV and the web...

We need a law that holds the manufacturer liable as well as those with major stock holdings and positions in the company responsible for their concoctions... they work no problem they don't and with outsome evidence to prove otherwise they get taken to the cleaners... not just for company assets but for personal assets...

    just my thoughts...

OK...but, why make a NEW law for that? False advertising is already against the law. How many laws do we already have on the books that are covered by older precedent?

the only issue is Pro-active vs. reactive... one law would keep you alive one would allow your family to sue...

Some day, maybe, down the road a ways, they may start the education process to teach how to differentiate between hype and fact. It takes only one trip to the carny to learn it. Usually. Start with infomercials, maybe?

Gosh, wonder what would happen if Congress got in session and didn't make ANY new laws for a few years. Just concentrated on the budget and how to get spending under control. Reckon then we'd see just how totally useless they really are.

Um, the attached article is two years old.

According to Thomas.loc.gov, the latest status is:

Latest Major Action: 2/4/2010 Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

Wow. Think about the second and third order effects of holding people who are stock holders in a company responsible. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to do that.

It's true, people fall for all kinds of charlatans. They always have, and they always will. A fool and his money are soon parted. Why don't we decide that people are responsible for their decisions, and when they make bad ones (like falling for something that they should know is too good to be true), they will have to endure the negative consequences.

They come out with new laws to try to limit or end your choice of vitamins every year. They say it is for safety, but honestly, I've never heard of any serious side effects or death from vitamins or supplements, and I work in the field.

I prefer "Revolution". Worked in 1776. A good prescription for what ails this nation now. It sucks that I'm too old and fat to take an active part in the festivities when they begin.

I must now amend this statement to include sugar. So, it's OK to choose to kill your baby, but not to eat sugary food....pssst--it's addictive and toxic, but an abortion is a medically safe procedure...yeah, not so much for the baby, who if left alone might cure cancer one day.

I know, I know....you're probably saying that this person is not a politician, who cares. Well, this is just the kind of excuse a politician needs to impose their will on others. Those key words: addictive and toxic.... Implies that you can't control yourself and those desires will have a negative impact on your health. Hence, the politician gets the FDA or CDC to *do* something that makes normal people criminal.

It's not your fault that you're fat and unhealthy! You're an addict...protected by law, and you need help.
