    Let’s start at the beginning.
Groundhog Day, at its most basic, is an astronomical holiday. February 2nd falls midway between the December solstice and March equinox.

That old song explains the why...
If Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, it’s an omen for six more weeks of bad weather. But if the day is cloudy and he doesn't see his shadow, it’s time for spring. according to that old song anyway...

    Get it now?

In my religion we refer to today as Barri, when the fertility god Freyr (associated with weather and farming) and the goddess Gerðr who is most commonly associated with the more modern concept of Mother Earth consummate their marriage.

    Happy Barri day, RR!

Recent weather has had us dealing with clouds and rain... and clouds. But not today! Today it's bright and sun-shiny! :D

 at Sea's picture. He certainly can't do much worse than some weathermen at predicting the weather patterns!

This is the christian holiday called candlemass day, covered up by anything else that they could get to stick in people's memory. The groundhog seems to have won out.

Being a Pennsylvanian I must say that Punxatawny Phil is a state treasure...his cousin is even the mascot for our state lotto.

But after Phil and his cousin Gus "the second most famous groundhog in Pennsylvania", you can eat all the "minibears" and "whistlepigs" you like!

Hmm kinda like the way Yule was co-opted into Christianity and named Christmas following the Christian jihad against those poor heathens of Europe?
