I am thinking about getting a Nook tablet computer. It is reasonably priced and has a slot for a memory card.

Does anyone know if you can play your own video files? I have Stargate converted to mp4 files and want to be able to watch them.

hmm, been a while since I had mine stock, but I believe you can. The videos can be loaded from your PC onto the nook. Can't remember if mp4 will play or not though.

I have since rooted mine out and I run cyanogen mod on it. Full access to the app store.

I'm interested too. My youngest granddaughter, an avid reader, has a birthday coming up and wants a Kindle Fire or a Nook. I'm trying to figure out which would be the better option for a young teen.

That was a very good review Quig... I use an iPad2 that I bought last summer for our RoadTrip, because it does everything that the MacBooK Laptop will do, except Play Flash Stuff, and has a built-in AT&T Cellular DataModem that gives you 3 GB a Month, for $25US, pretty much anywhere in the country, as well as WiFi, and Bluetooth, access that saves your Data Usage, when they are available. Momma's Samsung NotePad is getting pretty beat up, and threatening to die on her, during this deployment, so I told her, if she could find an Apple Store, she could replace it with an iPad3, or a 11" MacBookAir. She is seriously looking at the iPad3, with its WAY COOL Screen, and long Battery Life. It costs about double, for the 64GB with Cellular, but it integrates with all the AddressBook/Calendar/Browser/Reader Apps that work on her iPhone4, so no relearning any of the operating procedures. .... YMMV.... Oh yea, and it does Skype, just like he iPhone4 does, as well... That is how we are communication while she is away....

I have an iPhone and a MacBook and a Mac mini for at home. I am definitely pro Apple. But. No memory card slot. And while I can watch my Stargate videos on Apple, it is only by adding them to my ITunes library. Which is soon to fill up my terabyte external drive. I guess I just want something non-propriety to use.

You can place movies (mp4/m4v) on an iDevice without going through iTunes. Transcode your movie (any format) with Handbrake (free and Open Source) and then transfer it through wifi to an App like Air Sharing. Open Air Sharing and browse to your movie.

Handbrake even has h.264 presets for iPhone 4 and iPad/ipad2.

I use iTunes as little as possible.

As Melbo suggested, Handbrake is a good tool. I use it in conjunction with DVD Shrink (you don't need the best quality on a tablet or iPhone), but the files are still pretty big. After I convert to .mp4, I can either put it on my iPhone or rooted tablet (mini SD card).

As I recall however, I had some trouble when I first started out--the movies I ripped (Cars) were encrypted and I got sound but gibberish for video. I can't remember exactly what I did, but maybe I had to put something else on there that lifted the encryption. Maybe Handbrake has been updated since then to be a 1-stop-video-copier. There are lots of 'how-tos' out there. I did this so long ago I can't even remember, but it wasn't too hard.

That's it! You need the DVD43 plug-in for Handbrake to lift the encryption.

I used Handbrake to encode the DVD's. On the Mac or Linux the encryption is no problem. I just need the capability of uploading and watching, then deleting and uploading new. Looks like the Nook will do that. I will ask at the store also.

Another Note here: There is a little Adapter for iProducts that allows for Direct Import/Export to Memory Cards..... I bought one for use with my iPad2, but Momma and I both can use it with our iTouches and it works with her iPhone4 as well....
