Here is a pic of a 500mg Amoxicillin capsule for future reference. It is generic and recent....I just purchased them a few days ago from a pharmacy.

(I'm sure everyone knows this, but I'll mention it again anyway: I took this pic with my super smart phone which attaches a LOT of information the the image--including GPS lat/long (you can turn this feature off). So, keep that in mind when you're posting pics of your moonshine still.

    !?!?!PENICILLIN ALLERGY!?!?!

IF YOU HAVE ONE PLEASE READ!

It is not unusual for patients to have a "reported" history of a penicillin allergy without knowing the details of the reaction. Penicillin and penicillin derivatives are responsible for most allergic drug reactions primarily because they are the most frequently prescribed medications by physicians. If a patient has a history of a penicillin drug reaction no matter how poor the history, we recommend that an alternative class of antibiotic be prescribed. In other words, all penicillin, penicillin derivatives (i.e., Amoxicillin) and cephalosporin antibiotics (especially first generation agents such as Keflex) should be avoided. If the patient, indeed, had an allergic reaction to penicillin, the immune system can remember this for years and a similar or more severe reaction can occur. We stress to physicians that antibiotics be only prescribed for "bacterial" infections. Overuse of antibiotics has resulted in an increased frequency of allergic or adverse drug reactions and antibiotic resistence. We also stress that physicians do not act cavalier when a patient reports an allergic drug reaction to any medication, no matter how poor the history, since in most instances alternative agents with similar efficacy can be substituted safely. In the event a penicillin or penicillin derivative is neccessary, skin test reagents to detect whether or not an individual is allergic are available in most academic allergy centers around the country, including the University of Cincinnati. These test reagents have an excellent negative predictive value (i.e., if they are negative, it is unlikely the patient has allergic antibodies to penicillin). If they are positive and no alternative to penicillin is available then desensitization to penicillin is possible but should only be performed by an experienced allergy specialist. Typically, patients who are allergic to mold spores that are known to cause allergies and asthma are not automatically allergic to penicillin agents. Although, allergic antibody levels decline over years, it is still possible to have an allergic reaction and, therefore, we advocate that all patients be tested to penicillin prior to taking this drug if a penicillin agent is absolutely necessary for use to treat an infection.

    What is safe?

    Ciprofloxacin, or Cipro
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones. It is used as a potent, broad-spectrum antibiotic to fight bacteria in the body.
It may also be used to prevent or slow anthrax after exposure.
More information can be found here, including side effects, allergic reactions, etc.
Veterinarian Equivalent: 500mg Fish Flox Forte

    Doxycycline
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It fights bacteria in the body. It may be substituted in place of penicillin to treat common infections in those people who are allergic to that particular drug.
Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, Lyme disease or tick bite infections, anthrax infections, cholera, periodontitis (gum disease), and others.
Exercise caution with expired Doxycycline / tetracycline and -cycline medications. There has been some documentation of liver damage and some have even labeled it toxic if used past the expiration date. However, Doxycycline provides a great alternative to penicillin medications for those who are allergic.
More information can be found here, including side effects, allergic reactions, etc.

    Vet Meds

I just wanted to mention something I discovered while reading the article from the link above.

    For Cal-Vet Supply

Nowhere on their webpage and nowhere on their meds bottles does it state USP. All of their meds are listed as Pharmacy quality or Standard Pharmacy quality. However, their tablets do match up to the on line descriptions for color and markings.

Another supplier that I located is:

    Aquatic Pharmacy

    Their webpage states,
"All of our products are pharmaceutical grade, USP.."
And all of their bottles are marked USP.

Their tablets also match up to the on line descriptions for color and markings.

I have purchased from both, but this wcould be a factor for me in the future.

    Take Care

Found this on the website below. Thought it might be useful when deciding on witch ones to get.

List of Antibiotics and their Uses | Flu and Superbugs SuperTips

List of Antibiotics and their Uses
The following is the list of frequently used antibiotics to treat particular kinds of infections.

    Aminoglycosides
Infections that are a result of gram-negative bacteria can be cured by aminoglycosides. These antibiotics treat pneumonia, typhus, and other bacteria-causing illnesses.
Aminoglycosides cannot be taken orally so its must be injected. When injected, side effects can include damage to ears and kidneys.

    Penicillins
Penicillins are used to cure skin infections, ear infections, respiratory tract infections, dental infections, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea. Penicillins can be combined with ingredients such as beta-lactamase inhibitors, which will protect the penicillin from the harmful bacterial enzymes that may destroy it before it performs its function.

    Cephalosporins
Cephalosporins treat staph infections, step throat, pneumonia, bronchitis, tonsillitis, otitis, gonorrhea, and skin infections. They are also used in surgical prophylaxis.

    Sulfonamides
Sulfonamides are antibacterial agents that fight various forms of infection. They function similarly to penicillins. These antibiotics effectively treat kidney infections, however, side effects may include damage to the kidneys. Patients are advised to drink lots of water to prevent the drug from forming crystal deposits.

    Fluoroquinolones
Fluoroquinolones treat skin infections, urinary tract infections, and respiratory infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis. Using fluoroquinolones has side effects too, usually manifesting in the digestive system. Examples include: upset stomach, mild stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. These side effects are mild and will cease over time. This type of antibiotics should not be given to children and pregnant women, since the drugs are known to affect bone growth.

    Macrolides
Macrolide antibiotics treat soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, and genital infections that are caused by specific strains of bacteria. This type of antibiotics is used to treat patients who are sensitive to penicillin. Side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort.

    Tetracyclines
Tetracyclines treat malarial infections, chlamydial infections, and syphilis. They can also be used for mild acne treatment as well as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases, upper respiratory tract infections, and typhus.

Antibiotics are very important in health care as they treat and cure various infections. Unfortunately though, certain bacteria have the capacity to develop resistance to them. These antibiotic resistant bacteria cannot be killed by common antibiotics and won't be found on any list of antibiotics and their uses. This makes certain illnesses very difficult to treat. Always seek medical advice about antibiotics use. Never misuse or overuse the drugs.

I always like to buy two different dosage sizes for each medication. That way it's easier to use smaller dosages. However, if you are going to purchase in bulk for SHTF situations, then 500mg is a good one to have.

My opinion is that it is better to take too much than to little in a rough situation. Take a full dosage of 500 vs 100 isnt going to kill you but when you take only a limited amount the problem you are trying to solve might.

The justification for smaller dosage to me is if you need to treat a child.

I recommend getting the higher doses; splitting pills if needed. You can open a capsule if needed for partial dosing.
