    "Whale Wars" in Oregon
I don't know if this topic is being or has already been covered so excuse me if it has. Yesterday I saw a small blurb that the Whale Wars guys from Animal Planet will be at Bonneville Dam to "protect" the sea lions. Has anyone else heard about this or does anyone have any more information? If this is true, it seems like sailing the open Arctic Ocean to protect whales may be a little more safe than interfering with passionate Oregonians and Washingtonians about salmon.

Great now we have sea lion huggers here:rolleyes:

If they feel so strongly about it, they should climb up on the rocks and hug them.:D

Funny you should mention that. A buddy of mine was talking about his strong dislike toward the way the Sea Shepherd uses their liberal ties (and funding) to support their role, which only serves to benefit the corporations while punishing small business and private fisherman. I told him of a film I watched in college called "Sharkwater", with sharks being the central focus of the film and how they are endangered by overfishing and lax regulation. The Sea Shepherd was also there to wave their flag and incite hostility.

The bottom line I see, is that protectionism only works in favor of big corporations while putting small business and private fisherman out of business. Their role follows a noble cause, but humanity does not have to fit into their definition of humane to be civilized. There are alot of hidden plots at work here; don't always trust your eyes or emotions.

Just let Paul Watson sail one of his Sea Shepard Pirate Ships, up the Columbia River, and interfere with a USFW Agent, dealing with a Federal Court Mandated Operation, and see how fast a US Marshal, AND a USCG Officer, show up and slam this Fat Idiot into a Federal GrayBar Hotel.... Now that, I would PAY to See.... Paul Watson is a Bully, and EcoFreek... Just ask him why he no longer takes his fleet into the North Atlantic, and mess with the Norwegians.. Had something to do with a Norwegian Frigate putting a 5" Shell across his Bow, and telling him, on the VHF Radio, "The NEXT ONE was going thru the Wheelhouse."... Turned his A** around and He Split the Area at Full Speed, and NEVER went Back. Then decided that the UnArmed Japanese would be an easier Target, since they have No Navy, and their Coast Guard, by Statute, can NOT Leave Japanese Territorial waters.... ...... YMMV....

Actually the JMSDF can leave the territorial waters and have done so a few times to support operations in the Gulf and have a Naval base in Djibouti, Africa. For political reasons, they probably will never use their Navy to defend whalers. They have some pretty cool ships. I was working at one of their bases back in October of 2011.

That is some interesting information. Just curious, did you get any pictures? What makes their ships cool?

They have some older and newer ships that to me looked cool. They had an older destroyer that looked to be from the Korean war era because it had 3 gun turrets instead of missiles. The newer destroyers use a form of our Aegis system used on the Arleigh Burke destroyers and Ticonderoga class cruisers. Just do a Google image search for the JMSDF ships and some will pop up. After 10 years in the Navy and 13 as a DOD contractor, I dont take to many pictures of that stuff anymore.

Sorry for the detour off topic.[peep]

The more beer consumed during the course of cooking, the better it tastes. : O
