The secular legal system is best kept secular The secular legal system is best kept secular and preeminent over religious legal systems. I trust, that also includes Church canon law originating in the Vatican? For some reason the Church seems to think that its own canon laws take precedence over secular laws, particularly when it comes to the protection of its own interests.
i can indeed read... I can indeed read.....
Republican Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed a bill aimed at keeping state courts and agencies from using Islamic or other non-U.S. laws when making decisions http://ca.news.yahoo.com/kansas-governor-signs-bill-effectively-banning-islamic-law-234840632.html
emphasis is mine. Church canon law would come under the rubric of "other non-US laws". The Catholic church has in many instances tended to deal with child sexual abuse as a sin issue, rather than as a criminal offence, and have generally preferred to deal with such matters internally in accordance with canon law, rather than to refer the matter to the secular authorities as a criminal matter. It is a vestigal example of the Church's assumption unto itself of an historical privilege of "Benefit of Clergy". Benefit of clergy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Although the implicit intent of the legislation is aimed at Sharia law...the legislation would seem to apply to the Canon law institutions of other faiths...including Christian and Judaic sects. Don't be surprised if an alliance is formed between muslims, jews and christians to push back against this legislation...different religions may compete against each other in terms of their respective faiths, but when common interests are threatened, a more united and ecumenical vibe tends to come to the fore (the issue of gay marriage being one of those uniting issues in common).
I wonder how long it will be before they start protesting the law and screaming we are violating their religious rights. I am glad to see a State step up and hope alot of others follow. This is America and they should obey American Law if I go to their country I wouldn't exspect to be judged by American Law. Let me go to a contry that don't allow firearms and tale one with me. When Im arrested and I tell them Im American I will still be thrown in jail and charged in that country. The only thing telling them Im American and you have to judge me under American law will get me is beat. Or tell a Muslim in another country I am a Christian and they have to judge me by Christian will get me is head cut off on tv.
