MonkeyNet is just another Setup to remember.... When going into a place where you might encounter another Monkey with SECURE Comms capability, MonkeyNet Channel/Code is where you would do your initial Contact, and then mutually agree on another Channel/Code for Private Comms. Typically, You would use a MonkeyNet Symbolic, or ASCII One Time Operational PAD, to designate which Channel/Code Setup to use, thus eliminating any eavesdropping, while you do the initial Exchange. OpSec says if you are vetted into MonkeyNet, you would use one of the Universal Operational PADs, to make that initial Exchange. If either, or both, of the parties are NOT vetted into MonkeyNet, then you would need to make the initial Exchange in the clear, and take appropriate precautions, when doing the initial FaceMeet, as your initial Comms Setup, would NOT be SECURE, as well as the mutually agreed upon Channel/Code Setup. That is why vetting into MonkeyNet is important. It gives you access to the MonkeyNet Operational PADs required to make SECURE MonkeyNet Comms Exchanges, right off, rather than waiting to exchange a Mutually agreeable non-MonkeyNet PAD, during the FaceMeet.

This is why we publish the technology for everyone, but keep the Distribution KeySets and PADs, and Operational KeySets and PADs, limited to vetted MonkeyNet Users. ANYONE can setup their OWN Mutually Agreeable PADs for use, anytime SECURE Comms are Needed, between two parties. They just have to use a common PAD, on both ends of the Comm Link.

Now that the technology is well established Offshore, I can give the download URL, for the technology, to anyone who would like to get setup. This allows one to get to know the technology and use it for their own Private SECURE Comms, while still not compromising the MonkeyNet SECURE Comms System. How this all works, is explained n the MonkeyNet White Paper, available for download, in the Advanced Comms forum.

Do these take batteries? Or are they chargeable? Because if they are just charge powered then that is a reason why, me, personally would rather have walkie talkies and carry spare batteries!! I know though that some walkie talkies only are powered by charge but those are the ones I dont like\or want. Just standard walkie talkie w\ batteries.

They have removable batteries. They are cell phones with the PTT function. If you look back to post #41, I was able to find chargers at the thrift store for them and the 2 that I bought came with a car cradle and data cable that was basically useless, but, I was able to take the cable and turn it into a USB charging cable. It was pretty easy. I was able to get links out to about a mile and a half, although,at that point it was a little sporadic. At 1 mile though comms were solid. All this was with one unit inside my house which is surrounded by trees. I want to take them to the beach where I can test longer distances line of sight. I have seen the batteries as cheap as 5 or 6 bucks online.

A prepper that is good to go would have multiple ways of recharging the batteries in the IDen phones. Whether it's a solar panel, wall wart, hand crank generator, or cigarette lighter plug. They'd also have spare batteries for when frequency of required charging for said battery becomes problematic.

But then again, I'm just guessing ;)

[bestpost]Yeah I realized I could get a solar panel few minutes after posting, thanks for tips.. But all in all my ideal power source would be to carry batteries, a mini solar panel I am thinking about buying it can be used for other purposes as well then just that!!

Just a quick note on walkie talkies, I believe that most WT's are vulnerable to Directional Finding which could be problematic if you don't want anyone to know where you are at. Testing of the IDen's has shown the risk of DFing to be minimized.

That may be yet another reason to make the jump to the Motorola darkside.

    YMMV.

What do you mean by directional finding? Working like a compass or it shows where the other channel signals are coming from?

Think Military Signals Intelligence or SIGINT

These SECURE Phones are Spread Spectrum, Frequency Hopping, Digital Modulated, Comm Units. This means they are NOT DF'able using the normal Direction Finding techniques, because the RF Carrier is never on any ONE Frequency, for more than 10 milliseconds. They are NOT Scannable, for the same reason, as well as being Digitally Modulated. You are either Locked Up when the transmission is first Initiated, and can demodulate the speech, or you are not Locked Up and you hear NOTHING. This is what makes them SECURE. There are 10 Channel bandwidth chunks of spectrum, and 15 Spreading Codes, to choose from, when setting up your local Squad Comms Setup. MonkeyNet uses Channel 5, Code 5. If you chose to setup each unit, with the 10 Digit Private Code, for Private Unit to Unit Comms, this 10 Digit Code becomes the Spreading Code, and only that Unit can hear the speech, sent with that Private Code Setup. These are the most SECURE Comm System, available for less than $50KUS per unit, which is what the .MIL Units cost. We have a lot of Field Data, on these, and understand their capabilities, and range data, very well. ..... YMMV......

I used this guy below. I ordered the phones on Sunday and had them Wednesday. Both phones were in good condition. You can take the cable out of the cradle and easily convert it into a USB charging cable with an unused USB cable and some heat shrink tubing. Both of my phones also came with the SIM cards as well. No chargers were included though but its an easy fix.

Yep, lots of those units still available on eBay... and price is still holding under $15-$20 Per or better for the i355s...
These will be very handy for Family, or Squad Comms, around the local AoO....

I'll let you know how they are working out Bruce. Should have them here in a week or so and will go down to the Basement and get em strac and charged up for a field test with my brother and couple friends. Do all I need is the instructions in this thread to go to direct talk mode for the i560's ?

You will have to get them setup for DirecTalk Booting, once they are charged up.... I would suggest that you download the User Manual from the Motorola Website. It gives all the instructions for getting those Settings, entered into the phones. Once you get them booting into DirecTalk Mode, then you can deal with Channel and Code setups, Private Number Setups, and Contact Lists. If you have the Data Cable, and the software, available from the Motorola Website, you can manually setup on Phone, then clone that to all the rest, including a Group, or Squad Contact List, for your Group. Falcon15, Visutrac, Brokor, Kingfish, and a bunch of other Monkeys are using this system for local AoO Comms.... after you get used to their operation, you will likely want to get EarBud/Mic Setups for at least some of your units, to make them covert, and quiet.

Just a NOTE, here: I have recently purchased an Inductive Coupler that slips over the i560 Antenna... I am looking at buying a Wilson Bidirectional Amp for the ISM Band, this winter, and see if this will get around the External Antenna Port issue that the i355s have. (they don't use the External antenna Port when in Directalk Mode) As a Licensed Ham Radio Operator I can use this Mode with up to 10 Watts of power, and any size Antenna I choose.

Also NOTE, There are two different versions of the Data Cable for these. One that charges the phone off the USB connector, as well as pass Data, and one that ONLY passes Data.....

Didn't someone mention a cable that charges and transfers data ?
