I think that we should have walkie talkies in our 'Survival Pack'. If you have to seperate from members in your group, or other 'Allie Groups' then it would be a smart idea to get some walkie talkies and\or different communications. What kind of communications do you have in your Survival Pack? :?:[sniper66]

If you don't have walkie talkies then you could figure out how to make a communication radio, even maybe a foxhole radio, and these are a little[OT] but a radio jammer would also be necessary if you can hold onto it legally in your state\area....

What are your opinions on being able to communicate??[beer]

You must be the FNG. :D Welcome aboard! [boozingbuddies]

Try the search tool out. There are some recent threads on this very subject and there's this whole sub-forum dedicated to it.

It wouldn't take you long to look at every thread.

Did you know that I am a fortune-teller? I predict that BTPost is going get on here and tell you that radio jammers are illegal....even if you say you're only interest in them is post-SHTF....he'll still say it.

Who Me? I would suggest that SurvivalTech read the iDen/ISm Secure Comms Thread in the Advanced Comms forum.... these are exactly what he was talking about, and Dirt Cheap..... . YMMV.....

If people still remember the cb they come in handy unless your battery goes out in your car or truck

I am still wondering why a "radio jammer" would be necessary...and they are illegal, BTW.

A foxhole radio (the real ones) were made from everyday items...like crystal earphones, blued double edged razor blades...oops, they aren't so common these days LOL.

    BTW, welcome SurvivalTech.

A CB Radio is like standing in a park, and yelling at the top of your lungs, to your friend, just outside earshot....
Everyone will know your business, except your friend, who can only hear every third word....
40 channels is not enough, to give ANY reasonable amount of privacy....
Especially when your competing with every Texas Trucker, on the highways...

techsar, A foxhole radio made sense back in WWI, as AM and CW Broadcasts were the only RF happening in that era.
Now days, unless you want to hear Rush Limbaugh, or some other Daytime Talk Dude, Music of some description, there
really isn't much use for a Detector Type Receiver. Communications has come a long ways in the last Century..

RF Jammers need to be very specific, and designed specifically for the signals they are intended to jam.... So unless you have
a Equipment Platform, with massive amounts of Power available, and enough room for a complete Suite of Equipment, your
really not going to be very effective at stopping anyone from communicating.

    ...... YMMV.....

Even worse the jamming is so effective they come looking.. (eek) ;)

Secure transmissions are possible. What is difficult is hiding the actual RF emissions. IMO, Comms would depend on just who is looking.

I'm staying very low tech..Cb, with ssb...10 meter and gmrs/frs units.
I may decide to upgrade later on, to a more sophisticated radio and system , but no time for that right now...moving stuff 150 miles is no fun!

Have a Ham rig, base CB & mobile, and some hand helds in a metal box. They are isolated from each other and from the sides. Hopefully they are EMP proofed.

Just got my Main Ham Radio, back from the Radio Doc.... Very nice to get it back,
and put my backup Radio back in Storage. (EMP Proof, hopefully)

My group has very secure digital for "local" use comms, thanks to BTPost there. We have FRS and GMRS radios as well, but those will likely be backups. We also have other comms systems, and that is all I can say on the matter in open forum.

Alright but what abotu for some of us who are strapped on cash and would like to get away with something easier. Heck, I'm still using a web based service that lets me get messages out for before the grid falls or such. Off the Civil dispatch site. Figure it comes in handy while I'm getting some more of my money saved up for this.

The iDen phones can be had for a few bucks on Ebay, one of the best solutions found yet for secure comms.

As with all prepping, start small, in the case of comms, that means local. Brokor's suggestion of the iDen phones is good. Once the local net of like minded individuals is up, then expand outwards.

I currently use Talkabouts in our kits. Not the best but, they do the job.

Just being able to listen is far above nothing. A cheap receiver that will operate off a 12 volt battery/AC would be a fine investment.

I have walkies for all the family but when it comes to long range communications I suck. I find this area of prepping very intimidating.
