Independent study of the stopping power of various caliber handguns. Study was conducted over a ten year period. Found this on buckeyefirearms.org:

This same article, or one very similar to it was tossed around a lot about a year ago.

I couldn't find it using the 'search' function...but, I only spent about 5 min looking.

That makes sense. The article is about a year old. I searched for it too before posting, but didn't find it either. If I missed it, sorry for reposting. [dunno][dunno][dunno]

I had doubts after reading the comparison until I read the rest of the article.

Ok, quick scanning of the article,
Bring a shotgun to a house clearing
bring a rifle to a pistol fight
bring a pistol to a knife fit and shoot them twice
and if it's fisticuffs grab blast them with the double barrel as they are dancing around.

Confirms what I have suspected all along.
A 150lb man can kick a 200lb man's ass if trained properly, and a well trained gunman with a .22 trumps an idiot with a .45

I appriciated the post- created a bit of a family discussion/debate around here on what was next of the list. Probie just traded an old IPad for a 380 ACP yesterday- good trade I think. Looking forward to seeing him put some rounds down range in the next few days.

Ditto that, something has obviously skewed the data on the 9mm... But note that "every shot in this study took place during a military battle or an altercation with a criminal."

It would be interesting to know how many of the 9mm shootings happened on the battlefield, and what are the stats for military vs civilian use of the 9mm? The author points out that over half of the 9mm shootings involved ball ammo, which sounds to me a lot like the milsurp ammo that I use for plinking... I have to believe that your average carjacker or liquor store robber is going to be much more readily deterred than a terrorist with a bomb strapped to his chest - and if you're shooting terrorists, that means you're in the military, which means (if you're not using a rifle) that you're probably using a 9mm with FMJ ball ammo, right? (And would this account for the disproportionately high number of people shot by 9mm?)

Any current or former servicemen out there who can confirm this? Or is there a more plausible explanation?

one posssible answer is that wally-World has a low price on winchester white box 9mm FMJ... and many folks doing the jacking don't have the cash for JHP rounds.... and hey 9 buck a box vs 19 bucks a box... they still shoot....

LOL, and here I assumed that only the bad guys were being shot...

I guess the 9mm stats should be broken down into 3 categories then:

9mm fired by civilians in self-defense,
9mm fired by military personnel in combat,
and 9mm fired from converted Tec-9's, from the window of a moving vehicle... [gun2]

This really confirms 2 things I have thought all along (Due to good ole Dad's teachings):
    1. It doesnt matter if they are being shot by a .22 or a .50, once they start taking hits, they quit what they are doing.
    2. First shot placement is everything.

In response to rule number 1, what about that crackhead that was chewing on that guys face in FL? He didnt stop after the first shot. Might need a disclaimer. If expected response is not achieved, refer to rule number 2.

Yeah, Dad grew up in a different time. Not too many people chewing on other guys' faces in FL back in his day.

    obviously the police were not using zombie ammo for the face chewer, that would have made ALL the difference. {snicker}

Another round that is effective (as long as you load it down a bit) is a wadcutter. 30 yards or less it is devestating on tissue and it is accurate.

I would be okay with a wadcutter as long as it was cast real soft, like pure lead; BH of 5ish. Not sure I would do it in a .38, but a .44 Special with 200 grain supersoft wadcutters at 900ish fps would be good for some people.

Ha ha! You could call it a "health pill" in respects to your health, not the perp's. Can I get a perscription for a box of them?

I did write a prescription for a Ruger LCP to a granola chick after a druggie wandered into her garage one afternoon when she came home from work. Turned out okay, but she still wouldn't arm herself.
